2021 Job 1 PB with 60k miles and thankfully an extended warranty. Drove about a mile to get gas and when I cranked her up…..I got this:

Ford F-150 Adaptive Steering Fault IMG_4943
As I drive away - going straight - the steering wheel is aimed almost 90 degrees to the left. (See pic below) I drive it home and hook up the OBD link and it doesn’t show any codes. Take it to the dealer and they keep it for 2 hours running “updates” and whatnot to no avail. Service advisor says they‘re ordering an entire steering column and that it’ll be a two-day fix once it comes in.

Good news is that it is “safe“ to drive like this. It looks weird but it really doesn’t handle any differently. Any of you guys had the Adaptive Steering Fault?

Thank you for the reminder as to why I am glad I purchased an ESP.

The motor that does that is in the steering wheel itself. The module that controls it is located at the SCCM (the blinker is attached to it). Hope they don't string you along too much waiting on new parts to throw at it.

How is this possible? I understand adaptive steering like it helping with making the truck easier to turn and be able to use bluecruise. But shouldn’t the wheel still be hard mounted in the steering rack so you don’t lose the ability to steer the truck in the event of an electrical malfunction? How did your steering wheel be able to turn and not the wheels or vice versa

No, there's a worm drive motor in the steering wheel that makes the ratio variable by turning the column itself. That's how it can stick off center in vehicles with adaptive steering. It uses force gauges to do this. This motor in theory can move the steering wheel in the vehicle without imparting any steering movement to the wheels, which is how it can end up 90+ degrees off center as his is. Given it's a worm drive it's still safe to operate as it can only impart movement and not soak it up unless the system is broken and is actively operating in reverse trying to soak up your movement of the wheel. Never heard of this scenario, it typically just fails in place off center.

In all the cases that I have read about, the adaptive steering fault always appears upon start up - I’ve not read of one happening while someone was actually driving. The funny thing is, I really can’t tell any difference on how it handles, it has all the power steering it ever had.

Thanks - I’ll update as this moves along.

You seem to have not understood what they meant by "adapt"!

?

apparently, you thought that it was the truck, rather than the driver that would do the adapting . . .

To put a bow on this issue - the dealer had to replace the steering wheel which was $2200 with labor. Glad to have the extended warranty. When the truck was new, the steering wheel was off center to the left a bit…….now it’s off-center to the right just a bit. Going to take some time to get used to that!
