Last Thursday a electronic failure threw the truck into limp mode. It is limp, it would barely reach 20 mph.

Three faults flashed.. collision/Powertrain/Service Engine plus the wrench and engine indicators. It idled very rough like it was on 3 cylinders and would not change drive modes. After a restart the same symptom. Managed to get it in to the dealer.

6 days pass. I pick it up this am. Service Advisor said they got the codes and researched potential causes. In reality they cleared the codes and applied silicone to all electrical terminals. It is noted that the mechanic filed a NPF (no problem found) report.

Didn’t even make it home. Same 3 faults, same limp home mode and very rough idle.

Fault occurred in the Drive mode = Slippery and 4wheel auto.

The code on the RO for the throttle body is P2118 - Throttle actuator fault

Anyone have any thoughts? Know of this occurring with other rigs and the fix?

Hard to diagnose over the internet vs Ford dealer that had it for that long, but I’m going to first guess a bad 12V battery causing electrical issue (in your case your main is in the engine compartment standard, or your aux under/behind the passenger rear seat). Disconnect and load test and charge both fully with battery charger. See if problem persists. Maybe a throttle position sensor or mass airflow sensor went bad. But instead of throwing parts at it yourself, if it does persist, I’m also guessing you’re still under warranty so perhaps try different dealer if readily available.

Would a faulty gear shift module cause those symptoms? I believe there is a TSB for that for certain years.

..the saga continues..

Turns out the replacement throttle body was not the root cause. On the test drive the fault occurred again and the tech had to crawl back to the dealership last Monday. Since then the shop foreman and lead techs have been crawling over the rig not able to identify a cause.

Todays update - phone with the dealer service advisor. Since we last spoke the techs have not found the fault.

Shop Forman and the lead tech have opened a ‘Ford Engineering’ case to get expert support on the hybrid system. In the next few days they will be working with Factory engineers to develop a diagnostic procedure, work through it to identify the cause.

I’ve owned it for 31 months and just hit 25k. Gotta say it’s the 2nd time it’s stranded me since new, first time was the SSN (Stop Safely Now) alert when you got in and tried to start it. That was a software issue causing the fault. It’s not reoccured.

More later

Got it back from the dealer last week. After the second failure the techs replaced the throttle body. Truck went info limp mode on the freeway with the tech driving. The TB replacement was not the root cause and they needed help. Dealer techs opened up an engineering ticket with Ford for assistance. A test plan was developed to find the fault. The testing indicated that an engine wiring harness had a faulty conductor. So no it was not a throttle body..it was a conductor in the engine harness failed that threw the fault codes.

No issues what so ever with the dealer and the service experience. They gave me a loaner 2025 F-150 XLT with a 3.5. Noticed right away the lack of torque vs. the hybrid.

Happy to have my truck back :)
