Hi all,
I will make this as short as possible.
ISSUE:
-Truck stalled out a few times while idle at red lights, threw a P0025 Generic Code "Exhaust Camshaft Position TIming Over Retarded (Bank 2)"
-Engine has 175,000KM of mostly highway driving, has never hauled a trailer, driver has a light foot, the only owner and performed diligent regular maintenance
DIAGNOSIS:
-Took the truck to Ford for diagnosis, they pulled the valve covers, scooped the engine. State the camshaft lobes had disintegrated, lining had been scuffed and metal drawn into the engine (this is paraphrasing greatly).
-Ford Service writer immediately jumped to full engine replacement @ $23,000 (CDN$) and 4-5 weeks lead time for engine arrival plus another 1 week to swing it.
STEPS MADE SO FAR:
-Truck owners background is 48 yrs with Cummins Diesel as a Mechanic/Service engineer so we instinctively were skeptical of the quick replacement recommendation, struggling with it.
-Drove the truck home to our shop, changed the oil, added 10w-30 and Lucas Oil Additive.
-Cut open the oil filter, not a single speck of metal to be found
-Oil pressure is up
-We have sent out an oil sample to have it tested
-Truck ran like a top after oil change.
-Truck now runs great sometimes and others times it rough idles, sputters and dies.
-We think it's a cam phaser issue
We are at a crossroad, currently waiting a second opinion. The truck itself is in terrific shape, frame, body, interior and was intended to be kept for many years.
I guess I am looking for opinions & general conversation about what you might do, any thoughts on diagnosis?
We can swing the engine ourselves so that brings the replacement to about $17,000 (CDN$) Still not great news, the driver intended to retire this year and wanted to keep the truck as it is paid for.
What do you think?
I will post the actual diagnosis paperwork from Ford when I get it.
I will make this as short as possible.
