Looking at used pickups, specifically sub 30k, typically XLT, and around 100k miles.
As I've looked around 5.0 seem to be bringing a premium, while the power boost seems somewhat undervalued.
While a 2020 5.0 XLT is a couple grand cheaper then the 21 power boost, the 21 power boost seems to be several grand cheaper then a 21 5.0.
So, if you are going to buy a vehicle to drive to 200k miles or so, which route would you go?

May be something to be said for having newest Gen, but the power boost does make me a little nervous, right or wrong. Other then the larger screen do you really gain much going to a 14 gen?
Any input is appreciated

I absolutely would not want a high mileage Powerboost. Much more components and complexity to go wrong or just age.

Some 13th Gen 5.0s burn oil. I think it's 18-20??? But I can't remember.

That was my gut feeling...
And you touched on my next question. Would like to stay 18 or newer, but wondering if there are any reasons to focus on a 20 vs 18 or 19. I do like the idea of having the last year of an older style... Whether they actually have all the bugs out or not, it makes you feel a little better!

If your gonna get a 13th gen, get a 15-17 5.0, they are known as one of the most reliable trucks made in the last 15 years. You could wager they are as good as a tundra of similar vintage.
I’d avoid Powerboost’s like a plague, you’re just asking for problems with that powertrain.

I wouldn't get a 5.0 in 18-20. As said previously, a well kept 15-17 wouldn't be my choice.

I would not want a 18-20 5.0L, unless you are ok with carrying a gallon of oil with you. If you want a 5.0 get a 2021+, no extra oil required.

approaching 100k on my PB, not one tick, as good as new and it’s 5 star tuned, owned a bunch of 150’s including raptors, last 5.0 burned oil like a mofo, that was annoying, never again. Only thing replaced on my pb was the regular front battery

Feelings are the only reason to not get a PB.

Any high mileage power boost out there? Curious what maintenance cost from 150k 59 200k look like.
I love the idea of a power boost, and the concept makes all sorts of sense.

Electrical issues. Random gremlins in the hybrid system. That big battery’s gonna die eventually. Also around 150k those turbos will need to be replaced.
The powerboost is supposed to have the lowest reliability rating out of all 1/2 ton trucks on the market.
A high mileage PB just is a bad idea imo, no warranty to protect you, everything would be out of pocket.

I think the PB carries an extended 80K mile warranty on battery and EV components, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. If you are just a standard user I wouldn’t be too scared. They are largely trouble free.

If you are looking at used high mileage 5.0 is better bet. My buddy owns a decent size company with plenty of both in the fleet and the 3.5’s just unravel sooner than the 5.0 if a dump trailer lives behind them. VCT issues, phaser issues, loose timing chains. The 5.0 runs till it pops around 300k. The 3.5 will start to smoke, pop turbos, eat coolant, throw timing chains around 200k and you need to nurse it to hit the same miles the 5.0 will hit with no nursing needed is his experience.

I agree with all this.

One round of replacing the turbos and you’re prob gonna be ok. Phasers seem ok on these. Maybe one battery replacement too, hopefully cheaper with an improved unit by that time. That will get you to 300k
but agree less risk and cost with the 5.0. Now the trade off gen 13 vs gen14, prob a good time to buy a pb. The reliability numbers make no sense. A lot of original pb owners here haven’t sold them. I had one since early 21. I like to change trucks too, cant seem to want to sell this one. Strange

The comment to avoid them like the plague is a bit much imo

the OTAs kicked out 99.9% of any “issues”

If I were shopping for the most reliable (new-ish) pickup, a 2021 or older Tundra with the 5.7 would be top of my list. The 5.0 in an XLT F150 from 2015-2017 means that there is less of the extra stuff to go bad. That would be a close second for buying with higher mileage and expecting a long life, without tons of maintenance.

I plan to sell my powerboost after the warranty expires, if there is any hint of an issue with the high voltage system. Currently at 71k miles with no major issues..........but I will keep my fingers crossed.

Looking at pb maintenance, obviously not going to tackle a battery, but wouldn't have any issue doing a turbo myself.
5k budget get one of these to 200k? Crazy enough it looks like I could dang near buy one, just keep 5k to the side and still be about even cost wise vs a lot of these 5.0
