Even when it stays in 4A, you should put it back in the correct mode. Sport is far different than Slippery, even though they both use 4A.
Yeah, pretty aware of that. New truck with new technology so I've been trying out just about everything just to get familiar with everything on it. Was trying out the slippery mode and that's about as far as I cared to use it. Defaulting to normal mode is fine by me in 4A or just 2H driving around in the winter. Only time I put my F-350 into 4H is if it's beyond sh##y out other than that 2 wheel drive is more than sufficient. And @Gros Ventre yes, I've lived in Alaska about my whole life and have had 4x4 trucks forever, it makes my soul cringe hearing people in parking lots binding their drive train up because they leave their rigs in 4 wheel drive all of the time once the snow hits.

Some folks get so wound up with the electronics and such that they miss the obvious. Early on I noted that coming out of 4WD it was frequent to get the warning that disengagement had not occurred. After several bouts of this I began to shift to N and then hit the button (I don't have 4A). Then let it coast a 10 or 20 yards before engaging 2WD. Haven't had a repeat of the warning.

...the 4wd didn’t disengage.
Had this happen to me on a winter trip to NM. Was towing a 2000 pound teardrop trailer, and there was snow so I was in "Slippery" mode. Once I was on dry pavement, I tried to go back into 2H and it wouldn't let me. Hasn't ever happened when it's warm outside. I don't have 4A.

Also I've read you can grenade the front differential if you put it into reverse in 4H or 4L, saw that somewhere on this forum.

At my house I have needed 4WD to backup into my steep driveway with a pickup truck. With the 2022 F-150 I found that I had different traction control options in 4WD than I did in 2WD. I have learned that I can start out in 2WD and switch on traction control and have it work very well but I cannot start out in 4WD, which was confusing as it was unlike any other 4WD vehicle I have owned and the owner's manual does not cover this. It has been a trial and error approach.

Don't forget that there's an issue with gear windup. If you drive on a clear & dry road a touch too long the gears can bind up together. The fix is to back up for 50 to 100 yards. then shift.
