2023 5.0 - 3.73 / OZ Tuned with an AFE Intake

Hey guys,

First post. Just wanted to share a few pics of my 5.0. It’s been a good truck and running great. I am pretty anal with my break-in. I switched to 5w-40 very early in the motors life. I’m also running a PPE deep transmission pan and rear diff cover. I get fantastic highway mileage with the stock wheel / tire setup, especially on E40. Maybe a Whipple or VMP Odin at some point. It’s a good setup from Ford and the most reliable powertrain.

Short answer is engine protection especially factoring in viscosity breakdown. This article is a little dated and Ford has since revised their US recommendations to 5w-30 from 5w-20, but the info is still very relevant. I also live in a hot climate and put a little more stress on the engine than others.

Yes, of course. Did you read the article and understand about film thickness vs contaminants and how this is also related to heat / viscosity breakdown? 5w-30 will generally have the viscosity of 5w20 after about 2500 - 3k miles, or less depending on the oil, just due to fuel dilution and shearing let alone how heat affects viscosity. Again, climate should be a deciding factory in which oil grade you choose.

Haven’t read it yet, I will just figure you har the info, I do my oil changes at 3k just because of that especially since I run E85 and the truck is tuned

I'm not saying it's necessarily bad for you, but I find it better for me and my climate / how I run the engine. The good thing is ethanol actually burns off pretty quickly. I also run E40 for maximum timing.

I've wondered if I should be running a different oil in my 3.5 EcoBoost, being that I'm the FL sunbelt.

I also ran 5w-40 in my old twin turbo, not a Ford, but with very good wear numbers too. Turbo's are notoriously hard on oil and tend to suffer from more fuel dilution / shearing than NA engines.

Your MPG piqued my interest because I just purchased a '24 with a 5.0. What mod to you give the most credit for the great numbers? I am not familiar with OZ or the afe intake. If you have time a few more details would be great.

Your MPG piqued my interest because I just purchased a '24 with a 5.0. What mod to you give the most credit for the great numbers? I am not familiar with OZ or the afe intake. If you have time a few more details would be great.

Liqui Moly Ceratec, how I broke my engine in, early oil changes to rid the engine of debris, high octane fuel, and a tonneau cover. They all kind of play a role. Unfortunately, you can’t run higher concentrations of e85 in your 24 but you can run E30. I would not push it more than this. Unfortunately, 2024’s cannot be tuned at this point. The intake will work for you, but it works both ways, cruising you should see a slight bump in mileage, but of course sport driving you’ll lose some.

Interesting. Do you just add the liqui moly to the oil when you do your oil change or you use their oil?
