To be clear, most of the "leather" in modern vehicles is synthetic. The KR WAS one exception to this w/ its full grain leather. The synthetic stuff is more expensive and heavier duty than typical upholstery grade leather. Even in the platinum, the high-wear areas are synthetics. Curious if ford leaning into the 'branding' aspect if they're going to use an even higher tier material. Even now the KR is showing as "leather trimmed" so caveat emptor. The synthetics yield a higher grade product with nearly no maintenance needed.I missed a few earlier and I know there is more but in 2024 you get leather seats. In 2025, you get "Active X" (synthetic leather).
Some terms to be on the lookout for
- Full Grain Leather: Highest quality, retains natural grain, very durable, ages beautifully.
- Top Grain Leather: Sanded full grain, consistent look, durable but less than full grain.
- Suede: Soft, from hide's underside, less durable, susceptible to stains.
- Genuine Leather: Broad term, often lower quality, variable durability.
- Split Leather: From lower hide layers, less durable, used for less demanding items.
- Bonded Leather: Leather scraps bonded with synthetic materials, least durable, cheapest.
- Leather Trimmed: A mix of real and synthetic leather fabrics
