Anyone have any tips for figuring this out. Have had it to the dealership and they claimed it was a couple loose screws on the skid plate and that the rattle was gone. It sounds more like it’s in the corner of the dash, or wheel well, or upper engine compartment.
Thanks!

I have the same exact sound in the same exact spot. I have never figured out what it is and would be thrilled if someone has!

Sometimes it is really bad, other times I will drive over the same road and it's barely noticeable or not there at all.

I thought it was the felt belly pan around the CV axles for a while, but I swapped that with an FX4 skid plate that definitely doesn't rattle and it made no difference.

My air dam extension piece rattles if I tap it, but I don't think that is it because it isn't metallic enough and is probably too far forward to be this noticeable.

I have masking tape on several areas of my truck right now trying to track it down. It wasn’t the notorious A pillar or mirror bolts, so I’m thinking it’s something in the engine compartment. Like yours, it isn’t constant, not rotational, not necessarily associated with bumps, so I think it’s airflow and something flapping. I can still hear it but it isn’t nearly as loud or often, so hopefully I’m on the right track. Just going to take awhile to remove tape from certain spots and see if it returns over the course of a couple days.

I keep reading about the A-Pillar and mirror issues, but I don't think that's my problem either.

You're right about airflow. Sometimes I'll be driving on a perfectly smooth road, we'll get a gust of wind, and it'll make it happen. Other times, just an uneven (not bumpy) road will cause it. Doesn't necessarily need to be bumps.

It seems almost like it's in the engine compartment near the firewall to me, but the location of sounds can be deceptive.

Long shot but could the wheel well liner be loose?

Had an old Corolla where several of the plastic push pins that held on the fender liner failed or fell out. Liner would flap at certain speeds or wind gusts and sometimes rub against the wheel.

Other thoughts are the lower air dam?

Or check the active grill shutters to make sure none are broken and flopping around?

Sucks... sounds like a hard one to find.

I thought of the fender liner, but I don't think that's it - it sounds solid to me. I'm inclined to pull the lower air dam off to see if that does it, though, because that does make a very similar sound.

Make that two of us. I keep trying, but haven't found it yet.

I found some sort of vent line clipped to the brake booster that had a rattling check valve that sounded similar, but I put a little felt behind it so it wouldn't reverberate on the brake booster bracket, but I don't think that was the cause either.

Try this and see how it does. It’s made the most impact on mine. It’s the front differential vent line, so I don’t want to keep it taped forever. The little cap on top is loose and rattles. I still hear the rattle but it’s not nearly as loud or persistent. I plan to take it to the dealership again and have them try to figure it out further. The other thing I tried was the little flap circled at the top right, but it didn’t seem to make much difference.

That's the same thing I found. I pulled it off and put some felt between it and the bracket to try to stop the noise from reverberating since I knew I couldn't block the vent but I don't think it really helped.

Ah ok, didn’t know that’s what you meant a few posts ago. Try taping it down and see if it alleviates it some.

This sound moves for me in the winter. I thought I was crazy, but when I first got the truck (winter) I remember it being more from the center and I couldn't even tell if it was in front of me or behind me. This summer it moved to the spot where yours is. Now in the winter it's back near the middle. Makes it even tougher to pinpoint.

I still can’t figure it out. Had that vent line taped down for a little bit and it seemed to really knock down the loudness and frequency, but then it did it with the tape on. So tape is off and I’m even more confused and frustrated. Probably going to take it to another dealer and just say “figure it out. I don’t want it back till you do.”
