I bought my truck 3 years ago. I have a 2022 f150 lariat with the 2.7 ecoboost motor. I have company truck a f550 which I drive throughout the week and use my F-150 on the weekends. I changed the oil initially at 2500 miles and then every 5,000 miles after that. I used Pennzoil 5w- 30 on every oil change. Never towed anything with it and never hauled anything with it, just drove it on the weekends.
About a month ago I noticed when I would start it up on Fridays I would get a check engine light. It would come up knock sensor issue. It would disappear after I shut it down and restarted it. It happened a couple of times so I took it to the dealer. They told me they had to take the top of the motor apart to get to the sensors.
I approved it.
Three days later I get a phone call saying I need a new motor. They told of scoring on my cylinder walls. It will be covered under warranty. It will also be a long block.
I'm just seeing if there's anybody out there who has had this issue?

It is under warranty so I guess I wouldn’t be fighting it much, new motor for free isn’t all that terrible. I’d be curious what the cause was. Did they show you pictures from the scoping? There is a recall on those for shattering valves, I am curious if debris from a valve fell into the cylinder and scored the bore. It could also be a manufacturing defect with miles that low, perhaps an oblong bore casting.

Yeah I'm not angry about it ,just disappointed.
Ford said it was a manufacturing defect . They didn't get into to much.
Just told me a brand new long block motor will be installed.
They didn't say anything about the valve issue. The truck was running fine. No skipping or stalling issues.
The motor came in Friday , they're supposed to start on it tomorrow so we'll see.

Fresh motor you are good to go for another 200k miles. Hopefully all goes quickly and they don't keep your truck hostage at dealer for long time.

This is just one the many downsides to manufacturers discontinuing the use of cast iron or steel cylinder liner inserts and adopting plasma-sprayed cylinder liner treatments instead like Ford has. If there are any imperfections when the plasma treatment is applied then it will wear too quickly and expose the aluminum underneath and lead to failure. It's not a common problem but you get one every so often that fails. Luckily when they do it's usually very early with lower miles.

Another downside to this process is that engines are no longer able to be bored out and rebuilt anymore unless you are able to find someplace that has the equipment to perform the plasma treatment. Since this hardware is extremely expensive... Well you get the idea.

I have little complaint with the engineering or design of modern Ford products.
I have plenty of concern with the quality control shortcomings in the manufacturing and assembly though.

Statistically, you are probably in great shape, engine wise, receiving a new 2.7 Longblock. It's earned a great reputation since it was first released a decade ago. I'm actually happy for you that it revealed its defect before Ford could hide behind a spent warranty.
