Has anyone had this issue?

200 miles into a trip at highway speeds my truck started shuttering and misfiring. The following are messages I received in my ford phone app. My return trip in much cooler temperatures (if that matters) did not have any misfires.

-Service engine soon light indicates that your vehicle detected a misfire. The start/stop feature could be disabled when this fault is present.

and the second message

-The powertrain control system has detected a performance issue with the cabin heater coolant pump control circuit or that it may be stuck off

Bad gas maybe? Have a code scanner or forscan to dig deeper?

It was not bad gas. I did not mention this in my post, but I had the same issue in June while pulling my boat to the same location which is 300 miles one way. At the time. I blamed it on locking out to many gears and maybe it started running too hot. I do not own a scanner.

Might be worthwhile to pick up a OBDLink cable and see what you can find with Forscan. I'd imagine there are deeper stored codes that may reveal a bit more.

How heavy is the boat/trailer combination? I'm trying to learn why in addition to tow/haul mode, folks are locking out gears as well. I suppose if you lock out enough of them and you redline the tach, overheating is a real possibility.

Locking out overdrive and running more Rpms with the 3.5 Ecoboost will lower the operating temperature. Not get it hotter.

Nothing dumps more heat into the motor than those turbos spooled continuously. The Torque request made with your right foot is a command. The pcm is going to try to meet that command and at a lower RPM it will use additional boost. Take that lower RPM choice off the table and it will not require as much boost. Along with the water pump turning more rpms and increasing coolant flow.

Guys towing with this motor for many years now have been using this approach for managing shedding heat under heavy motor load.

A misfire, however, throws a wrench in everything regarding.

My boat, trailer, and gear is around 6000 pounds. I usually drive in normal mode and lock out gear 9 and 10 when towing. I do it because it uses less turbo which translates to better towing mpg. The towing issue in June I thought was brought on because I decided to lock out 8. 9. and 10 for the first time, but now I am wondering if it was something else since I had similar issues last week.

Agreed unless one refuses to slow down.

I was responding to this from the OP. Running at or near redline is the only way locking out 8-10 can cause overheating I can think of.?‍♂

I didn't have this in my previous post, but I rarely tow over 65mph

You gotta lock out a LOT of ratios to get this motor near redline!

Of course one extreme can be just as bad as another. :)

However, it's rare that the factory pc strategy will have you between 3500-4500 rpms on these trucks. Yet the motor itself is very robust and can operate at those rpms with a smile on its face.

Randomly tossing it out there...how many miles? Don't powerboosts require 60k spark plug changes as opposed to 100k plus for the standard 3.5?
