Just to add one more thought for everyone..... whether its just the ESP or even more so the maintenance plan.... with the way money is being shipped all over your dollars are going to get weaker (more so than normal) in the coming years so that $40 oils change maybe$45 in 22, $48 23, $58 24.... whatever, inflation has already started. point being is locking in a price now may work out better long term

There is a scenario where that would be the case and it is stated somewhere in the ESP contract. Of course not so with the factory warranty.

If you take it in after the factory warranty, there will be a deductible charge for the initial analysis. If nothing is found to be not operating as it should be, you are still out of the deductible.

If they find something and bring it to the service dept to do a repair attempt and that does not fix it and you bring it back for the same issue shortly after the repair, then you do not pay the deductible again.
Just trust in what I am saying. Between my parents, my 5 siblings, and myself, all utilizing Ford ESP since 2001, we have plenty of data to prove that each time you bring your vehicle in to the shop, you are required to pay a deductible, whether or not they fix the issue you brought it in for. If they changed something, then you are out the deductible. If they didn’t change anything, and you bring it right back to them, they might waive the deductible, but this has not been the case with all my past experiences.

Oh and here’s the kicker. You have to pay the diagnostic fee of 125 dollars or whatever, if the issue is not under warranty too, so the deductible may not even apply, and then you have to pay a diagnostic fee because Ford service technicians in Mobile at Autonation can’t fix a tire without instructions outlining the process.

Main things not under warranty on ESP: Headlamp/tail lamps fogging up or leaking, vehicle wind noises and water leaks, and other nick nack things.

I have had both Premium Care ESP and Premium Maintenance on my last 4 vehicles. Personally for me it is worth the money for Prem. Maintenance, the Prem. Care ESP is a roll of the dice, but now with the new high dollar/high tech stuff especially the $1,500 starter/generator on the truck, I believe it is a worthwhile insurance policy against big ticket repairs. I also just sold my 2015 F-150 for a much higher price because it had 1yr and 20,000 miles remaining on the 7/100 Prem. Care that I transferred to the buyer.

FYI the fine print says you have 30 or 60 days to transfer it or the Premium Care is void.

I transferred the warranty to the new owner the same day he handed me the check, local Ford dealer F&I guy just needed the bill of sale with the new owners info then printed me the confirmation of transfer which I emailed to the buyer. whole process took 15 minutes

Did you make out better going down route than getting a rebate?

Yes much better, used truck prices were/are nuts and a really clean used truck will bring out of the book. I had dealers competing to buy my truck, which I'm not going to lie was kind of fun playing them against each other. Ultimately a private buyer came and test drove my truck, made a great offer then we met at his bank to do the paperwork. The bank that the buyer used on my 2015 said they not using the book right now either but the strength of the borrower to make the loan decisions.

I have some questions and a story from a previous use of a third-party ESP.

Questions:
  1. I understand the number of components covered is different for PremiumCare vs ExtraCare but what I'm really concerned about are the turbos going out around 100k (from others that I've known that have EBs) and any of the new technology stuff having issues. To me, those are the biggest cost factors and things that I think would likely go wrong in the extended period. In the picture, the extra major things covered in premium are emissions, ford audio, and safety. After the normal warranty runs out I doubt there would be issues there. If there's something wrong with one of these it should come up within the first 3 years. So I'm wondering, I'm if I'm mainly concerned about the high-tech stuff and typical powertrain/mechanical stuff, wouldn't the ExtraCare be all that I need? Am I missing something?

  2. On Purchasing/Financing - If you buy an ESP at the time of purchase, can you roll this into financing or do you have to pay it all upfront? Would be nice to just roll it in under cheap financing than have to explain to my wife why I'm spending more money on my new truck.
Story Time:

I think an ESP is worth it. I agree with what @UGADawg96 and @PFD664 said - that it's like malfunction/repair insurance. On a previous vehicle I had, I bought a used Nissan Xterra. It had low mileage on it for how old it was (I wanna say like 78k or something but it was like 10 years old). To this day I still believe it was an RV pull-behind vehicle. Anyway, I wanted to be cautious about entering the main period of a vehicle breakdown, so I went with a third-party warranty. And it paid for itself!! It wasn't like it was in the shop all the time, but I think it went in like 3 times in 4 years. Replacing the starter, alternator, etc. Typical stuff that breaks around the 100-110k mileage.

The kicker was that I noticed an oil leak coming from the head gasket. The repair was thankfully covered as that was expensive. But during that repair, they discovered my engine was FULL of oil sludge. They were going to clean it all out, but I got a call a week later saying "Na we're not gonna do it." Apparently, they just cleaned out oil sludge on a truck that wasn't as bad as mine and 5 miles later the engine seized up and wouldn't run. So they didn't want to take a risk. I asked if it was covered under the extended warranty and they said it was - but only if it was the cause for breaking. Because it wasn't the cause of the leak they weren't going to fix it. CRAZY! The mechanic said he was impressed it was still running. Thankfully I still had some time on my warranty, but I was essentially driving a ticking time bomb knowing it could seize on me at any moment. It never gave out on me while I had it and I traded it in a few months before the warranty ran out.

ANNDDD lucky for you, I found the picture of the engine sludge. The mechanic told me to come by while he had the valve cover off...

The ESP Extra care is a good choice too, I preferred Prem. care as a personal choice mainly because I don't want to hear a service advisor say it's not covered under this plan but if you had....... also the Prem. care warranty covers some things that are not even listed in the sales brochure, a service manager showed me their list of covered components (it's a lot), so compare prices and get what your comfortable with. The biggest thing to watch out for are dealers trying to slip in a non-Ford warranty like TWS or another aftermarket company, so watch the paperwork very carefully!!!

Here is the premium care contract from mid-2012 for my 2013 Taurus SHO. This fine print outlines the items covered and excluded under the extended warranty plan.

Please keep in mind that this was mid-2012 so I’m sure something changed since then, but this outlines the gist of the ESP coverages.

Electric Brake Booster
Turbos
Sync 4 Screen & APIM
Hybrid Transmission that shutters already
Hybrid Electrical Components

Someone crafty with Ford Pricing, please post the prices of these components from a 2021 PowerBoost truck so we can show everyone how they may want to consider the premium care vs drivetrain only.

I would bet each of the above components are over 1,000 dollars, and probably closer to 2,000 each, and you don’t want your truck without brakes or the sync 4 system working. Those components would only be covered under the premium care plan, and these things are going to break.

The Powertrain coverage only covers you for oil lubricated parts within the drivetrain. This means no brake booster coverage or much else.

There are 20,000 dollars in components that wouldn’t be covered by anything less than the premium care plan, so please read the fine print in the contract a few posts back, it will save you headaches and heartaches galore!

Yes, You can definitely roll it into the financing if that's what you choose to do, on some vehicles I have paid cash for the warranty and other times I have done the 10 pay credit card auto debit to pay for them. Just depends what I have going on at the time or if one of my cards has a good rewards program running.

I always get a service plan. My dad was the one who told me, "Rob, you are not mechanical at all, just pay for the service plan and let someone else do the work." That advice saved me thousands of $$$s over the years especially. If I total all of them across 4 vehicles, they paid for themselves with just one incident: my 2011 VW Eos had its transmission replaced, which was close to $8k.

I also like to drive a lot, putting tons of miles on my vehicle. I am impressed that Ford does an 8yr/150k miles warranty.
