If you're in the top x% with a paid for house(s), fully maxed out on 401k and Roth, and have extra cash in both savings and a brokerage account(s), then sure, finance all day. But most people live beyond their means, have stacks of bills, and don't have an emergency fund. And there are a LOT of people in the middle of these two examples, which makes it very gray and less black and white for sure. Everyone has different situations. ymmv. :)
Yup! And thus in order to reach and have a positive impact on the largest audience you target the lowest common denominator. Its advice that works for all, although not necessary optimized for all. Those who are financially literate and make sound decisions can still use it as a gut check but they will likely have their own options.

Some of the payments I see on here definitely scare the hell out of me. Sticker on my XLT was $58,840, think after all incentives etc it was $52,900. I put around $5 or $6k down, my trade was worth $19,500, and I financed $27,900 for 65 months @1.49%. At the end of the day my payment is $447 which was higher than I've ever wanted to have on a car loan, but am pretty comfortable financially so convinced myself it was the right thing to do given the great resale value.

How does that work out? My wife and I plan on doing the same thing. My dealer is offering $1500 off through financing, but my wife and I want to pay it off and not have a car payment.
I did this on mine to get the rebate. They financed the difference of my trade, when I got the paper work from Ford credit, it will have your payment and due date and it will also show the payoff amount good for 15 days or something like that. I sent in the payoff and they sent me my title showing no lien.

FINANCE IT WAIT TWO MONTHS THEN PAY IT OFF. ITS PROBABLY THE FORD REBATE FOR USING FORD FINANCING AND THEY WANT THEY'RE MONEY BACK. THATS THE 1500 I FORFEITED IN MY DEAL BECAUSE THE LOCAL LENDER HAD BETTER OPTIONS FOR MY SITUIATION.

Net trade value $20k and put down $10k. $850/month for 48 months. Love DR, but got a 2.5% rate. I always finance if under 3% for personal loans.

I got into a discussion with a co-worker this morning about vehicle payments, which prompted me to make this thread. If you don’t mind sharing -
How much did you put down on your truck?
How much is your monthly payment (and for how many months)?

This is what I am struggling with. I’m a huge Dave Ramsey fan as well. And obviously financing a truck is a big no-no. But I really want this truck. I hate to touch money in my brokerage account that is earning 10%+ when I can take out a loan at 1.9%. I will put a significant portion down though.
I’d like to know what brokerage account you have that’s earning over 10%?

Sold 2018 XLT for what I paid, 43K. New lariat was 46.5K after rebates. Threw 10K from equity onto this loan for 60 months @ 1.9, it’s somewhere around 638/mo

My S&P index stock is at almost 20% for YTD and was 19% last year. It's easy to hit those numbers depending on the risk factors you take.

Ouch. You missed the Lariat deal that was on earlier in the year. There was also an XLT deal that was on at roughly the same timeframe as well. Caveat was that it was only 2 year leases and started with 16000km/year, but you could pay more for more mileage.

Huge Vanguard fan here. Love both their S&P500 and their Total Market VTI. They've been killing it for a few years.
