I am new to my 2022 Ecoboost 2.7L. I have driven in city on ECO and Normal drive mode, and have not seen any difference in gas mileage. I probably tried each mode for 200-300 miles. Now I drive on Normal all the time because it sets in by default.

That said, have you all really noticed a difference? Is 2.7L too small
An engine to even notice a difference?

I can get 98% or better in normal mode according to the Eco coach screen with my driving habits. Eco mode just makes the gas pedal less responsive. No notable gas mileage increase between the two.

Interesting to know even you didn’t see any notable difference in gas mileage! I agree, I have felt the acceleration to be sluggish in the eco mode as well.

I have tried no difference for my 5.0. It also feels sluggish.
Interesting… the dealer told me the exact opposite! They said the 2.7L and 3.5L Ecoboosts will show a smaller difference compared to their legendary 5L V8. The bigger the motor, the larger the difference as they said.

I have a 3.5L PB. I noticed slightly better mileage in Eco compared to Normal by around 1L/100km, so I normally stay in Eco.

24 3.5 here, 0 difference in fuel mileage. In eco mode the gas pedal is basically non-responsive. I found it better just to leave it in normal all the time and modulate the throttle if I'm trying to save fuel.

I've only tried ECO mode briefly on my 2.7 so I can't say if it helps with my mileage. I'm a very conservative driver speed wise and I make a constant effort to begin coast down as early as possible, so I can't imagine it could improve MPG much if at all.

Anyway, I'm quite comfortable with all the parameters of the normal mode so I have no reason to change. I find Sport mode quite ridiculous, holding shifts out way longer than necessary for no valid reason.

Methinks the difference you observe will depend a lot on your driving style.

The main function of ECO is to attenuate rate of acceleration to an economy-friendly rate (i.e. gentle acceleration).

If you already tend to not accelerate quickly, then you won't see much difference.

If you tend to like more rapid acceleration, it'll try to attenuate that by altering the drive-by-wire gas pedal curve, and likely be a source of frustration (you'll have to press harder on the gas pedal to enjoy the rate of acceleration you prefer).

The effect on overall fuel consumption will likely be greater if one has more stop-and-go driving (more events of acceleration from stop); less effect if your driving tends to mostly steady-speed travel (fewer acceleration events).

Uh you sound fun! I use sport mode when I need or want a more responsive truck especially on curvy mountain roads with lots of ups and downs and also in urban situations where I need quicker response. Plus it’s just fun. But mostly I run it in normal. I use tow haul for towing and I find eco did not net me anything and is no fun so I don’t use it.

Mode difference is no more than altered shift strategy and throttle mapping.

At least for a non Powerboost.

So at steady state cruising, the torque management request would be identical between the 2 modes. Same speed, same gear ratio. So same fuel requirement.

I suppose ECO mode could possibly squeak out a bit more efficiency during acceleration IF it could coax the driver into NOT increasing throttle position to compensate for slower acceleration?

As the wise fella above points out, the driver themselves determine if ECO is actually more economical than Normal.
