A lot of people just don't get this. Buying this warranty at the time of purchase is not a good decision. And financing it is an even worse decision.
And some folks making blanket statements just don't get that every person's circumstances differ. For example ....
  • I have a proven history of retaining vehicles for a very long term (witness my bought-new and still-owned 2005 F150), so bought my Granger-discounted 10-year ESP at the time of vehicle purchase.
  • I rolled my ESP cost into the 0% APR financing for my 2022 F150.
ESP plan cost inflation and interest earned on my money demonstrate that neither was a bad decision.

I just totaled my 23 GMC Yukon XL at 32,000 miles. I had purchased a GMC extended warranty, or so I thought. It was aftermarket. Getting a refund through the dealership was tough. They only sell. Do not expect service other than repair after the fact.

Sadly, this sort of 'trickery' is not uncommon among dealers of all marques.

Unfortunately, it can take a lot of awareness of the racket and explicit questioning at the finance-closing desk to force full-disclosure of explicitly what you're being sold. :cautious:

It's tough being a consumer, being an informed consumer is a lot of work.

Never buy an extended warranty through your dealership unless they’re giving you a good size discount. Consult with flood ford.com for their extended warranty. They give a pretty good discount buying through them. You don’t need to buy your vehicle there, but you can buy just your extended warranty through them at a discount.

I bought a 25 Ford F150 Lariat about a month ago. During signing papers for financing, I was offered 4 Ford extended warranties and I bought a 6 year 60,000 warranty and it was included in purchase price. While going over my papers this week, I found no warranty information (Information on warranty I purchased, length of time, what was covered, and price)but I could prove, I called salesman and he texted me a section of warranty , I couldn't prove I have anything with what he sent and what coverage I have. This is my 1st Ford in 30 years. Been driving Rams and Chargers. I always bought extended warranty on each and received a pamphlet showing which warranty I had and what was covered. This seems odd to me. What has been your experience? What did you get? Thanks. Would also say that this information was always included in my signed papers.
Just curious, did you ever get your money’s worth out of the extended warranties? I.E., repairs that would have exceeded the cost of the warranty plus finance cost?

It happens, just depends on your luck / karma:

Worth every penny. Got ESP with LED coverage. Both my quad LED's failed and Premium care covered the $5400 repair to replace them. Out of pocket expense for it $100.
Yep, the actuarial statistics are well-known, considering the total population of ESP sales the 'house' comes out ahead, but that doesn't preclude individual cases coming out ahead.

Ya gotta just consider your own risk-tolerance, finances, and what makes you happy, then make a decision and not look back.

Myself, just like my medical insurance, if I make it 10-years with no big claims on my ESP, I'll be happy with no regrets. YMMV. ;) (y)

I get the logic of waiting until the end of 3 years to see if you are going to keep the vehicle, but has anyone done the math to see how much more the same warranty would be then as opposed to getting it when you have, say 3000 miles on it?
I just purchased a Ford ESP from Ziegler Ford's website in Oct. It's for my 2023 PB. Cost was $3345 for a 10 year 150,000 mile warranty + Lighting. This was at the $100 deductible amount. Personally I think it's a great deal with the cost of repairs on these trucks.

Removing the 3/36K factory warranty that breaks down to $477 a year for piece of mind. I'm not going to have to fix anything on my truck myself. My time is worth way more then $477.
1 headlight with a bad LED running light cost $1800 to replace.

All interior and exterior lights / bulbs including LEDs are covered against failure under the PremiumCare ESP if you elect the interior / exterior lighting coverage.

This does add slightly to the cost compared to not taking this coverage (amount depends on the usual variables of location and contract duration in miles/months) but given the extraordinary cost of OE LED headlight / taillight assemblies bears serious consideration.

You can run the prices on Granger, Flood, etc ESP websites.

You may want to study the ESP contract posted here.

The lighting coverage is addressed in item 6C and item 7o), both on pdf page 7 of the contract attached at that post.

If your dealership that sold you your warranty is like mine, the finance office should have the pamphlets on his desk, and can go over it with you.

True you should wait until you know you’re keeping the truck. On the other hand the longer you wait every year the price will increase on the ESP warranty so keep that in mind also.
Good luck
A few more data points to consider.

1) Price increases are based on months from vehicle purchase date - per floodfordesp.com:
Under 12 Months
Under 36 Months
Over 36 Months
Over 41 Months
So, buying early can save money.
2) At any time, these warranties can be canceled and refunded on a pro-rated basis.
3) These warranties are transferable to a new owner
This means you can offer the new owner to pay you the pro-rated refund amount to retain the warranty. It could be a good reason for a buyer to purchase your truck over another.
4) The original 3/36 warranty covers fogging/moisture in light assemblies.
Unfortunately, this is specifically stated exclusion - even with the add-on for bulbs/lighting.
