I have a ‘25 5.0 SuperCrew with the BAP Plus package with factory duals. I love the look of black tips in the bumper cutouts but wanted a little more sound so I had the local muffler shop replace the factory muffler with a 40 series FlowMaster. The sound is nice on cold starts and at high rpm’s but I absolutely hate the drone at certain low rpm/engine load situations. Also very apparent when the cylinders deactivate. 🤮 It sounds awful - like I can almost feel it in my brain! 😂 Anyway, if you have the same setup, what have you done to get more V8 sound without cabin drone?

Probably the easiest fix is find a decent resonator. Could be installed before or after muffler. Or, get 2 resonators and install one in each of the split dual pipes right after the axle. It’s gonna require going to an exhaust shop I’m sure. Only other logical option is change the muffler to a Borla Touring style. It will almost certainly eliminate most of the drone. Not knocking Flowmaster, but those were popular in the 90s when everyone wanted their trucks very loud. The 40s series is one of their more aggressive style cans, and are notorious for lots of drone.

Thanks for the suggestions. I admit I’m a little behind on what’s best nowadays. I’ve run FlowMasters on previous Chevy trucks but haven’t had a new truck in years. I had a couple buddies with the 40 series on their late model Ford V8s and love them but I guess that’s all subjective. I’ve been considering the MagnaFlow but I’ll look into the Borla Touring as well.

Swap that flowmaster muffler for a Corsa. That will eliminate all of your drone. You will hear the cylinder deactivation though. BUT that can also be heard with the factory BAP duals.

I concur. Corsa is another great choice. Borla or Corsa would solve your problem. If Borla, I wouldn’t go louder than there “S” type. The touring is probably their most quiet. The S Type will give you more bark, but shouldn’t drone much at all.

I grew up putting Flowmaster 40 Series on all my trucks in the late 90s and early 2000s. Loved them, but they all droned. I ran Borla on a 2014 Mustang GT 5.0 and loved it. Great sound and minimal drone.

You have any experience with the Borla universal fit mufflers? Trying not to spend for a complete cat-back exhaust.

I have this same setup and did a muffler delete at first into factory duals. Very loud, sounded mean, bad drone...got to me after a year.

Put on a Flowmaster Outlaw direct fit muffler this summer. Love the sound, mellowed it out, less obnoxious in daily driving...but still LOUD. Less drone, but it's still there.

5.0L Flowmaster Outlaw cold start

I need to grab a video inside the cab.

Thinking of going to Flowmaster FlowFX next year. Supposedly "quieter" and less drone, but it's all subjective.

The thing I like about these mufflers is they are supposed to be a direct fit, no welding or exhaust shop needed. But their fitment isn't ideal either, tbh. Good thing is they are relatively inexpensive as far as mufflers go and can be swapped out in a few hours in your driveway.

Google Borla S Type Universal muffler. Should be the same muffler they use with their full systems. Just have a shop weld it in place.

I was considering the FlowFX or a MagnaFlow… and now Borla. I went the quick and easy route to start with and had a muffler shop weld in the FlowMaster so I guess I’m headed back there to see about a change. Hopefully I find the right one with the next or I’m gonna have enough in it to buy a complete exhaust.

I feel like a lot of people are not aware of the fact that Corsa does sell individual mufflers. Replace the flow master with this. Absolutly zero drone and sounds amazing. It will sound substantially better than the Borla or flow master weld in units.

I don’t agree that Corsa will sound substantially better than Borla… but this is a very subjective matter. I personally liked Borla better and they always sounded better than Corsa on my Mustang 5.0s. But, only you will know which you like better. For the OP, Try going on YouTube for sounds comparisons and asking other forum members. Might help.

I’d need dual outs.

Yeah I started on YouTube and ended up with the FlowMaster. Not many videos posted about the negatives. Like I mentioned, I love the sound of it from the rear but the drone is awful. You’re right when you say it’s all subjective.
