Well how about that… I could have sworn when I was obsessing with the build tool at the beginning of this year 502a included the unleashed. Maybe they deleted it from the package as a cost savings, or maybe my memory is faulty… both equally viable options.
502a includes B&O but not B&O Unleashed. I really like Unleashed and think it's worth it.

Same here. For myself I have never had an issue with gravel roads in any rwd car so figured I would just add the e-locking rear axel and call it good. If you’re more adventurous and want to camp in bad weather 4x4 is the way to go…. I’m more about comfort these days and would prefer to stay home then myself lol.
I'm in Minnesota. 4x4 is a must, just wasn't sure if I needed the FX4 for an extra $1k

oh yeah, not an option there. Here snow is purely optional.

Had my 502a for almost 3 months now. Have loved every minute of it. As for options I have almost everything listed above so:

Powerboost vs. 5.0 - One gets you a louder engine that can be modified, one gets you more power, more torque, better gas mileage, and the chance to have a 7.2kw generator in the bed. I have a Powerboost and its been amazing and has some serious balls.

FX4 - Did not get it since I was lifting my truck, the only thing left would have been the skid plates. If not lifting it can give you a bit more off-road capability.

B&O - I have the 18 speaker Unleashed. It is good (Great actually for an OEM system). That being said the low end underwhelms and I will definitely be modifying and adding to it in the future.

Power Tailgate - The ultimate in lazy excess... And yes I have it and love it.

Work Surface - Awesome, love it, use it, you should get it.

Twin-Panel Moonroof - I have it and its amazing. I have had regular moonroofs in many of my cars before and other than some road trips it never got opened let alone even pulled back the sunshade from it. In my F150 I'm actually irritated when its too hot and sunny that I have to pull the shade. The feeling of openness it provides is amazing.

First of all your truck looks bad ass....I have Lariat 6.5 PB FX4 on order. I am planning on doing a level, not a lift but I thought the extra protection under the truck would be good with all the hybrid systems. Am I off? I don't have a VIN so I can still go back and change that.

2021 F-150 Lariat 502A FX4 3.5L
I am looking to get myself a truck and am 90% set that I am getting a new Lariat. The other 10% is wanting to wait and see what Toyota is doing with the '22 Tundra. This would be the first truck I have owned.

That being said, I am looking at the Lariat short bed on the Ford side. My for sure options are:
  1. 4x4
  2. sport appearance package
  3. 502a
  4. 360 camera
  5. copilot 2.0 active
  6. Trailer tow package (I don't currently tow obviously, but would like at least the hookups there in case I get a trailer down the road)
  7. 36 gallon fuel tank (if I go with V8)
Where I am unsure of, is other options. Mainly, the engine choice... I went in thinking I want an old school V8, but the powerboost with the 7.2kw power in the bed seems really tempting.

Other options I am unsure of are:
  1. FX4
  2. B&O sound system upgrade
  3. Power tailgate
  4. work surface
  5. twin-panel moonroof (I have only opened the moonroof in my current car a handful of times)
I plan on owning this vehicle until the wheels fall off if that makes any difference.

Basically I wanted to ask the hive mind what their thoughts were on these options. Did you get any of them and wish you hadn't? Were there any options you didn't get and wish you had? There's not a lot of inventory out there to compare options side by side. I also live in Minnesota so I would want to get some sort of under body rust protection if you have any recommendations on that (I've heard certain types can cause more issues by blocking drains holes in the body)

Note: I did not include options like spray in bed-liner or tonneau cover because those can be acquired aftermarket (feel free to drop recommendations on those as well)
I have a 502A that is basically fully loaded. I bought it off the lot for ~$61k on a $68k MSRP so probably ended up with some things I didn't need, but it was cheaper that way.

The only things I would say on the additional options are that I would not bother with the Power Tailgate (I turned mine off because its buggy with my tonneau), I would take or leave the work surface (I have worked on it and turning sideways is a bit wonky), and while I am usually take it or leave it on the moonroof it is really cool, though probably wouldn't pay the money for it. I like the sound system upgrade but haven't heard the base B&O. I would probably spring for that. The two things I'm missing I wish I had were the underseat storage and the 2kw onboard (I have a 3.5L non hybrid).

Basically if I were ordering I would go all of your for sure, FX4 depending on use case, probably on B&O, no on power tailgate, take or leave work surface, probably no on moonroof. I'd prob add the underseat storage in back and propower on board. Engine wise I would personally get the hybrid, followed by the 2.7L, but I mostly just like saving gas. If you want a fast truck I'd get the hybrid or the 3.5L, I own the 3.5 and test drove the hybrid and both are really fast. I just never really use it, and while I didn't drive the 5.0 I'd prob take the 3.5 over it because its more torque and better fuel economy so regardless of what you are doing with it its probably superior. But seriously if I were ordering I'd get the hybrid. I really liked it but I couldn't get them to negotiate on them and it was about a $9k difference after I got the price down.

The most offroading I'd probably do would be to a camp site, rough gravel roads, or stuff like that. It's pretty much gonna be a yuppie truck. I mainly want a truck for my woodworking hobby and doing work around the house. Like I built a fire pit this past year and the bricks about bottomed out my wife's odyssey :D
Just buy a trailer and a hitch for the Odyssey, lol. That's way cheaper.

Anyway, I think 4x4 is kind of a wash, you pay for it up front and get more when you sell or trade, so that part comes out about even. I have a 502A, unleashed, 4X4, FX4, 36 gal tank, with about every option except the Active co-pilot and max tow. Mine has the tow package and tow tech package, so I think I am missing the 3 leaf rear springs and upgraded bumper (whatever that does). I tow a boat that is around 4k lbs. and it is effortless.

I really like all the bells and whistles, auto leveling headlights, power running boards, etc. Things I could live without are the sunroof and unleashed (i usually do my own stereo). I picked a truck up off a lot that had most everything I wanted using x plan, just due to all the delays etc. and it just happened to have a few options I wouldn't have picked if I were building one.

Thanks, it's my dream truck. Any protection underneath is gonna help. Just figured I could buy after market skid plates for less than the FX4 since I would be ripping out the shocks anyway.

I don't tow much (if ever) but I went with the Tow Technology Package for $800 that includes the 360 camera's. The camera's are about $750 by itself and it has to be purchased in addition to a tow package. This gives me the cameras and towing ability at the lowest cost point.

I have a 502a pretty much optioned out with the powerboost. I think the only option I don't have is the work surface, which I made one because I use it a lot (find myself sitting in parking lots waiting on meetings when I'm on the far side of town). If i didn't get the powerboost i would have gotten the PowerStroke, sole for highway gas milage (i do a lot of 500 mile one way trips). If I didn't do so much interstate driving my other choice would be the 2.7. I had the 3.5 in my 2018 502a, and it felt like overkill since I don't haul anything over 7000lbs or race my truck. I'd take the gas milage from the 2.7 over the 5.0 or 3.5.

Go to Apple Ford, Freeway Ford or Invergrove Ford and sit in as many of them as possible. Put a number of them together on the online "build your own" to see what works with what.

4wd is pretty much a necessity in MN. The truck is light in the rear and lacks traction on icy roads (like I35 in Lakeville south of the McStop. ) I usually drive in 2wd and switch to 4wd if the tail gets snakey.

I found that the skid plates were good at packing with snow which turned to ice. If you decide to do some off-roading though, they may be a good addition. Hasn't been a problem with Cat convertors going missing on these, but a skid plate offers a bit more protection against battery powered sawzalls.

Yea... if I don't get the powerboost, I'm gonna let my inner redneck out with the V8.

I have a Lariat PowerBoost with almost everything except Unleashed, 7.2kw generator, tow mirrors, moonroof or work surface. I went with the extra rust undercarriage package but that was a free upgrade.

If doing it again (which I won’t be for hopefully 15-20 years) I would probably go with the unleashed and 7.2 kw upgrade. The base B&O is definitely lacking. Overall the cost is minimal compared to the total on the truck and probably pays for itself in resale if you ever planned on reselling. I love the power tailgate and step and I haven’t driven the non-hybrid 3.5 but the PowerBoost is a fun ride with plenty of torque whenever you want it. I have the skid plates just as extra protection for everything underneath given the PowerBoost battery setup.

Beautiful truck Mike. Looks like your build is identical to mine except for 3 things. I ordered a different color, I didn’t go with the moonroof (Texas) and lastly....you have a truck & I don’t ?. I’m still waiting on my build to be delivered. Like I said, beautiful truck.

Thank you! Loving every minute of it and i'm sure you will too. I'm in San Diego were its perennially 65-70 degrees so we get lots of days to use that moonroof.
