Have you done maintenance on your truck and re-used bolts that the manual says to discard?

I first learned about "one time use" bolts after I replaced my rear shocks (and re-used the bolts, of course  )

Learn about Torque To Yield bolts.

Very good shop/repair YT channel in general.

But he specifically calls out Ford bolts not being TTY. He says usually it's only about about thread locker needing to be applied. Based on the appearance I think it looks more like Nylock instead of cyanoacrylate.

AFAIK if there is no "angle" measurement provided as second step, it's not a TTY.

I know, and he calmed me down when I saw this last night :D , just thought it was interesting and I definitely learned something.

The bolts on the rear shocks are not torque to yield and only have a spec of 66 ft/lbs. the nuts must be replaced though since they are nylon locking and are a one time use. I believe Ford says the bolts should also be replaced when doing the rear shocks.

I reused my rear shock bolts. No problems and they have been on for about 6 months.

Both "should" be replaced:

I did too and it's been almost 3 years.

As I said above - I just found this video to be interesting because I did not know about "torque to yield" and I also learned about leeway of the non-TTY bolts that the manufacturer says to dump.

If you have the opportunity to go through the full shop manual it’s incredible how many fasteners are listed as one time use despite not being torque to yield. There are a ton.

Yes, I have almost always reused bolts that stated they were “one time use”. Never had an issue ever in the past 20 years of modifications. I get it, it’s a rule for a reason. I’m sure it has burned someone at some point.

The reason is because Ford either uses a nyloc nut, or uses factory applied thread locker. If there is no angle spec following the ft/lb spec, then the fastener is not TTY. Just clean the threads, and apply new thread locker. Job done

Flywheels and Driveshafts can put on quite a show... Real crowd pleasers!

That’s beyond my mechanics skills, but those drivetrain parts make more sense on replacing them!

I'm looking at having a Kelderman air suspension put in a 250 and am going to buy the driveshaft bolts and supply them just to head this off.

Had a friend of mine's Flywheel get loose through the hood, went a few blocks and come down through the roof of a house.

The Driveshafts have killed a few that I know of. These were from a "while" ago when people hot rodded stuff, somewhat poorly under a shade tree.

This is a recurring discussion on the Mustang forums as well. The brake caliper bolts are listed as "one time use" but only because they come with thread locker on them. As stated earlier, clean off the old thread locker, reapply, and reinstall. Nylock nuts should be replaced as they deform when torqued and retain that memory after removal.

Does anyone have a list of TTY bolts on the current Gen F150 to share so we know what to look out for?
