I picked up my 2024 PowerBoost back in February (used, with about 4,000 miles on it). I'm now at 10,000 miles, and while I love the truck overall, I’ve had a few concerns from the start.

  • Door Latch Issue: Early on, the truck wasn’t registering that the door was closed. Not a huge deal—dealer fixed it quickly.
  • Groaning Noise at Idle: Occasionally, when the engine is running at idle, there’s a loud groaning sound at 1K RPM. It’s not constant, but when it happens, it’s very noticeable.
  • Powertrain Malfunction Alert: Just recently, I got a “Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power” alert via FordPass. I hooked up an OBDII scanner and found a bunch of codes (not looking to troubleshoot here, just sharing context).
All of this has me feeling uneasy about the truck’s long-term reliability. I was hoping to keep it for 8–10 years, but I’m starting to question whether it’ll hold up.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with their PowerBoost? What would you do in this situation—stick it out, or consider moving on?

2023 PB 501a 4x4 short bed 7.2KW. PL=1658lbs.
My guess is the groaning noise at idle, is its about to shut off. Mine does that too. Has since new. See if it doesn't coincide with an RPM change and immanent shut down to electric mode.

As to the others, I've not had them but I had plenty of electrical nuisance type things early on. Since doing a bench charge and BMS reset they're all gone and stayed gone but anytime the thing gets the least bit glitchy, the consensus is to put it on the charger and most times that disappears whatever is ailing you.

I'm a complete PB fanboy but if I,

1) Lived where cold winter was long.

2) Didn't use the truck as a mobile office.

3) Didn't have use for the generator.

I can't honestly say that I'd recommend it.

It is a more complex system and complexity has it's own inherent risks and costs.

I wouldn't be without one, because if you need any of the above, or tow a camper inside of it's weight class, there just isn't a better choice. And it isn't even close.

Given your first statement I'd pursue warranty remedies for any problems / concerns and see if things stabilize to your satisfaction.

But if you continue to lack confidence in your vehicle, for whatever reasons real or imagined, IMO it's time to take the hit and make a change.

Do you have an MX+ to monitor temps/voltages? Some, if not most of the issues with these pickups can be prevented by running the fan speed over 5. This will force the DC/DC charger (similar to an alternator) to charge both 12v batteries at higher voltage and prevent errant messages popping up on your dash.

Did you purchase a premium care ESP? I highly recommend this option if you decide to keep your PB.

Great opinion, thanks for sharing.

I'm in New England and though our winters are tough they aren't as bad as much. I only got the truch because of fuel economy. Prior I had a 2.5 ecoboost which I loved.

First thing to look at is the powerboost idle. When idling and Eco-idle is not enabled the ICE will lug due to the EV motor charging the HV battery pack. Go into the truck settings and enable Eco-idle. This will raise the idle rpm when not in gear to 1350-1500 as the system charges the battery. When n gear and a charge cycle starts it will also put a large load on the ICE causing it to lug (groan) and is perfectly normal behavior for the PB. The charge cycle happens when the HV battery hits 43% and will bring it back up to 60% in roughly 90 seconds. It's a little disconcerting at first when it groans/lugs during a charge cycle but you get used to it lol.

For the rest take it to a trusted dealer to have them look at the stored codes to identify if what the issue is so they can resolve them. If it continues to cause issues during the factory warranty, then trade it in or if the problems get significantly worse then push for a buyback. If the issues get resolved and it remains trouble free through the bulk of the factory warranty period and you have not done so already consider getting a Ford Premium Care plan that covers the length of time and mileage you plan on keeping it for through Granger Ford. https://grangerwarranty.com/

No, but I see there is dealership on this forum selling it and if I decide to keep this truck i'm going to buy it.

Be aware that wintertime temps, will whack PB's MPGs pretty hard. For mine, that means going from mid 20s summertime, to upper teens, wintertime. 20F seems to be an important temp.

Is Granger Warranty a ford warranty or is it 3rd party?

I believe it's Ford Premium Care, or that's what it says on my coverage document form them. LOL. But you can contact them on here @Granger Ford about it. I would also say if you do get a plan through them and have OEM LEDs get the additional coverage option.

Granger normally has the most competitive price on the Ford Premium care ESP.

The optional coverage for lights, rentals and other stuff isn't that expensive, just pick a time/ mileage/deductible that works for you.

Most if not all PB's have tech packages that include either quad LEDs or projector LED (Lariat and higher only) What's the package level on it? Does it say 302A or something like that? You can also take a picture of a headlight and post it up.
