2023 F-150 - adding fuel additive - PITA!

A "Motor Oil Geek" YouTube video convinced me to add a fuel additive (Chevron) to my 2023 F-150 3.5L Ecoboost. I inserted the fuel additive bottle filler neck into the fuel filler neck, and the only thing that happened was fuel additive spilled out around the filler neck and ran onto the ground.

I pressed harder - no good. WTF??? I looked inside the filler neck and, with a flashlight and screwdriver, found this:

The detents have to be simultaneously pressed for the inner flap to release. A fuel hose nozzle does that, but the additive bottle (and a funnel with narrow spout) did not. I finally pressed one detent with the screwdriver, then inserted a funnel with narrow neck to press the other detent, and the inner flap finally released. My father-in-law said his 2022 F-150 doesn't have those detents.

Why the hell does it have to be so hard to add some $!*%$ fuel additive???

You can also use the Techron bottles, they have properly size small neck. The small Lucas bottles also work well.

If you look at your owners manual, you have an emergency fuel funnel, it’s with your truck’s jack.

Techron is the additive I tried to add. I shoved the Techron into the filler neck - no bueno.

You are right, I have not read the owners manual for this vehicle. I've never read any car owners manual in my 58 years of existence. But I appreciate you highlighting that a fuel funnel is inside the truck. I will check that out.

Not a stretch for any of us to believe that ... lol. Got rid of ~10 gallons of fuel stored in my winter generator gas cans by dumping them in the F150 just before leaving for a week in TN for vacation. Funnel could be bigger, but it works. Been doing this for years.

I bought an extra just for adding additives, so the one in the truck stays clean...and in the truck

that’s funny, I did it two days ago at work just fine. Zero spillage the neck on the bottle is the exact same size as the emergency funnel that’s located with the jack

This is my first F-150 so I didn't know I had to "learn" how to operate the fuel filler neck. Never had to "learn" that before.

Learn something new every day, I always say, but who would have thought we had to learn how to use our capless gas fill to add stuff to our tank.
