An interesting and worthwhile article I'm sure, but lacking a WSJ subscription I hit a 'paywall' and am unable to read beyond the first paragraph. So it goes.

Option 2 has it if the link doesn't take you to it

https://www.removepaywall.com/searc...os/trump-metal-tariffs-auto-industry-c964a59a

Basically states a cost increase of $400 which aligns w/ the ai analysis of increasing vehicle cost by .4 to .6% depending on variant (total impact v. aluminum alone). Ford sources 90% of its steel from US sources.

Given a 5klb mass and ford saying the 14% by weight of the F150 is AL, if the cost is passed on as double at current rates it amounts to $315 (typical crew cab mass)

Following from....
https://x.com/i/grok/share/tD0LAbQxmsLO9VZTIHh5TUYIM

Let’s break this down step-by-step to estimate the impact of a 25% tariff on aluminum, given that 75% of the aluminum in an F150 is sourced from Canada, on the vehicle’s price.
Step 1: Define the given values
  • Weight of the F150: Approximately 5,000 lbs (assuming "5klbs" means 5,000 lbs, as "klbs" isn’t a standard unit, and context suggests pounds).
  • Aluminum percentage: 14% of the F150’s mass is aluminum.
  • Tariff on aluminum: 25%.
  • Aluminum sourced from Canada: 75% of the aluminum used.
Step 2: Calculate the aluminum weight in the F150
  • Total weight = 5,000 lbs.
  • Aluminum weight = 14% of 5,000 lbs = 0.14 × 5,000 = 700 lbs.
Step 3: Determine the weight of Canadian aluminum
  • Canadian aluminum = 75% of the aluminum weight = 0.75 × 700 lbs = 525 lbs.
  • Non-Canadian aluminum = 25% of 700 lbs = 175 lbs (not subject to the tariff in this scenario).
Step 4: Estimate the cost of aluminum
To calculate the price impact, we need the cost of aluminum per pound. As of recent data (approximate market rates in 2025, based on trends), the price of aluminum is around $1.20 per pound (this is an estimate, as prices fluctuate; in 2023, it hovered around $1.00–$1.50/lb). Let’s use $1.20/lb for this calculation:
  • Cost of aluminum in the F150 = 700 lbs × $1.20/lb = $840.
  • Cost of Canadian aluminum = 525 lbs × $1.20/lb = $630.
  • Cost of non-Canadian aluminum = 175 lbs × $1.20/lb = $210.
Step 5: Calculate the tariff’s impact
  • Tariff = 25% increase on the cost of Canadian aluminum.
  • Additional cost from tariff = 25% of $630 = 0.25 × $630 = $157.50.
Step 6: Impact on the F150’s price
  • The tariff only affects the Canadian-sourced aluminum, so the total additional cost is $157.50.
  • Assuming the cost increase is passed directly to the consumer (a common assumption in tariff impact analysis), the price of the F150 would increase by $157.50.
Step 7: Contextualize the impact
  • The average price of an F150 in 2025 varies by trim but is roughly $40,000–$60,000 (based on 2023 prices adjusted for inflation). An increase of $157.50 represents:
    • On a $40,000 base price: ~0.39% increase.
    • On a $60,000 base price: ~0.26% increase.
Final Answer
The 25% tariff on aluminum, with 75% sourced from Canada, would increase the price of an F150 by approximately $157.50, assuming the aluminum cost is $1.20 per pound and the full tariff cost is passed to the consumer. This is a relatively small impact (less than 0.5%) on the vehicle’s overall price.
If aluminum prices or sourcing percentages differ significantly from these assumptions, the impact would scale accordingly. Would you like me to adjust for a different aluminum price or scenario?

Says it's a manufacturers offer but Im only seeing that offered at that Sulpher Springs location. Local to me in Idaho, best offer is 1.9% for 84 months.
Still a steal at 0.0% though...

It is. And it's working. And more importantly, start using US-based Aluminum sources. Period.

The WSJ isn't the amazing source of truth that it used to be without resorting to click bait, fear-inducing headlines.

@HammaMan 's breakdown was excellent. Will $157 more turn people away from buying a brand new truck vs. ridiculous interest rates from the last 4 years?

We have 4 idled / reduced aluminum plants in the states representing ~ 2800 jobs directly, and by extension another 4 or so employees indirectly. As such a $157 increase in direct costs for AL alone represents another ~15,000 US jobs. Oh no, more jobs in the US, what ever will we do? Sell them a new truck?

Why save a little to boost economies of 3rd party nations? I care more for the health and wellbeing of my friends, family, and neighbors than I do for those of another country. Not to say I wish ill will towards those people, but all things considered, I want to take care of those in my country first.

We currently have a trade imbalance of roughly $1tril/year. Just about every country tariffs US goods in one form or another to 'protect' domestic industry. I support the big dog mirror doctrine. To those finally facing tariffs my message is simple....

Get your head out of CNN and MSNBC, guess you missed the part where Canada blinked.

Or maybe, Honda moving Civic hybrid production to US from Mexico. Or maybe Apple's investment to start producing in US. And that's just a sample.

Something to consider is that the tariff is hit every time a part or piece comes over. So for anything that makes multiple trips over the border they will be tagged multiple times. Also that X post for Canadian tariffs has heavy implications that those are the only tariff values. Those high percentage numbers are once a certain amount of US goods are imported as a measure to not flood their own market with too many US goods. So the values are marginal after so much is imported, its not kicking off at *298%*.

While I don't think any single person wouldnt prefer to buy from their local community or own nation, Americans have short memory and tend to not care about source of a product when they get priced out of it. We can argue macro economics until we are blue in the face and what's better for the overall health of our economy but the bottom line is the majority of public does not care as long as the cost is low. If his strategy pushes prices and inflation to the point where the public turns on this admin no one is going to listen.

as for 157$ being nothing, we are talking about a automaker that still uses incandescent bulbs to save a nickel per bulb and still raised prices roughly 5-10k per trim in a 5 year span. I appreciate your math but i have a hard time believing we are going to get such a raw math addition to pricing.

Ha ha- get your head off of Troof Social- nobody blinked. It’s a trade war now and we’re alienating our allies and cozying up to Vlad. Wall Street finally figured it out the past two weeks - trumps policies ain’t as pro growth as they originally thought. . Buckle up.

I don't do social media, son. Sorry to disappoint you.

They blinked. I thought they were gonna stop our electricity, eh? Mr. ONTARIO Ford put his foot down into a steamy pile of "we don't need you".

And glad you think the stock market isn't manipulated either. Time to wake up. The whole thing is a game.

Should we talk about egg prices next? ??
