Towing: what do you see in your camp grounds

Now that I am on vacation with the trailer, I find I need to keep my mind on something other than work. As I walk the dog around the camp ground, just having look at everyone’s set ups.

I noticed something about the trucks doing the towing in the HD space it is pretty even split between the 3 domestics but in the 1/2 ton space my guesstimate is about 5:1 ford over the other two domestic brands and a Toyota or Nissan is rare find.

maybe Canadian camping rednecks love a ford 1/2 ton , I got to say mine is pretty sweet tow machine , what do you see in campgound near you ?

i see tons of superduties and rams. i also see both in the 3/4 ton range pulling monsters that no way are in the correct rating for the truck
honestly i think the ugly rams and superduties are pretty evenly split

i bet around here its 1 gm to 4 or 5 rams and fords.
i also see folks like us with larger motorhomes pulling behind more and more full size trucks and less jeeps.

this could be because its getting harder to find NEW vehicles that are four down towable
when we sold the edge, we set the 150 up to be the towed,

on lower end i see those little single axle trailers pulled by hondas, and smaller pickups and some VWs

campgrounds sure display the range of stuff that is for certain

imo its easy to see those who do weekends vice longer term in the things they bring or tow
weekenders tend to bring two houses worth of totes and are always unpacking them looking for stuff
i love that, as these people bring everything for the kids and really make it an outing

I see all stripes of tow vehicles, some obviously better-matched to what they tow than others.

In terms of marques / brands, the campground (and RV forum) population of vehicles seems to track fairly close to the overall (or sometimes regional) market share of each.

And yep, I see all sorts of RV camping habits from minimalist to over-the-top with 'stuff', but the vast majority of folks and families seem to be having fun, and that's what counts, IMO.

there was an f150 last summer , that I saw pulling into the spot next to me and I was so over loaded the trailer had the front stabilizing jack bent to the point of not being usable and the spare tire for the trailer that was mounted to the underside of a frame was dragging on the ground as he was backing in…

That’s pretty much what they had. That’s just a few over the top set up’s.

We do tyler state park for Christmas in the park each year. Decorated and over the top is the name of the game
It's a gas. Loads of fun, lots of people venturing out to enjoy the season
I recommend being active in your local state parks that put these on
It's so much fun and rewarding
Plus you become a master at packing, setting up, taking down etc.. it's only 3 days , with one day to set up
We go days early to get it good

We do Xmas and Halloween at the KOA. It’s a blast and the everyone have a great time.

If one wants a 36-gallon fuel tank in their 1500 truck they need to go with a Ford as max with the Ram is 33 gallon and with Chevy/GM it is 24 gallons.

What I have noted on my travels is how many 5th wheel trailers are towed by SRW versus DRW trucks. The majority of the trucks used are SRW.

I drive out in West Texas all of the time and see half ton trucks pass me pulling 30+ foot floor over axle trailers. My AS looks like VW bug compared to a lot of these things, and while they have WAY more space, I would be very nervous pulling one with less than a 3/4 ton. I haven't seen anyone in the ditch, so maybe I'm just being a sissy.

My parents have a seasonal site. The weekends I've spent there it seems on the weekend warrior 1/2 ton side of things, 90% Ram/Ford and maybe 10% Chevy/GMC. When it comes to the 5th wheel 3/4 or 1 ton scene it's a relatively even split between the "big 3."

Almost every weekend though, without fail someone ends up in the bushes. Doesn't seem to matter what their tow vehicle is lol.

Similar story at the race track with all the toy haulers, I usually attend PCA events and the crowd is part race shop owners+clients, business owners, some company trucks, some private owners. GM is always the minority, some cummins HD Rams, lots and lots of super duty. Half tons are also mostly newer F150s.

Pretty even split for the 3/4 ton trucks. Half ton are about 40% Ford, even split on the Chevy and Dodge, then a sprinkle of Toyota and Nissan. I see more Dodge half ton trucks that are likely way over their payload than any other. "It's got a hemi in it, it can do it"! Till it can't...

These days I almost exclusively dispersed camp. So its a bunch of gay ass subarus and ford escapes with some jeeps/tacomas mixed in either tenting it (like me) or pulling an "offroad" popup, or worst of all would be the roof tents lol. The sites where you might find actual travel trailers and 5th wheels have typically been Silverado and ram 2500s. I dont often see F250s pulling campers.
