question about our 4WD system..

I know for a fact that our rear axles can be equipped with a locking differential. the front however doesn’t have anything unless one jumps up into a TREMOR/RAPTOR.

with that being said, are our fronts just straight up open differentials or is there some sort of technology that replicates a locking/limited slip differential e.g. Tacomas/4Runners with ABS braking that simulate a locking/limited slip differential.

Its an open diff with some brake torque vectoring when slip is detected. They even stopped putting the Torsen in the front of the Raptors in 23.

That being said I haven't been in a situation where I felt like I needed anything more up front in my 23 Raptor.

The ABS is more than capable of doing it, and ford has the engineers to make it near perfect. The team that did the vehicle dynamics on the mach-e has that system dialed in quite well. It's got 2 separate motors, 1 front, 1 rear, with completely open diffs. When a wheel comes off of the ground, the wheel in the air maintains speed effortlessly. I've seen no official literature mentioning such functionality, and there seems to be more questions than answers. I couldn't imagine having the amount of engineering into modern vehicles and not have one of the lead engineers from each department clearly spell out the functionality of the various systems.

They do use braking bias but it sucks. The Torsen also isn’t quite as good as a selectable locker, there are some good videos that show the Torsen weakness. Its weakness is in low speed crawling or bogging, it doesn’t lock up without pretty hefty throttle application where a selectable locker would just be there whenever you want it. I’d call the Torsen a 50% improvement over the open diff, but it’s not quite the 100% solution a locker is like the locker we can option on the rear axle.

I’ve had front lockers in the past on different trucks, and I couldn’t imagine realistically needing it on a F-150. How many of us are three wheeling these and taking them up 40 degree black diamond trails?

145" wheelbase is a bit too much for such things. Still has its uses though in off-road other than rock crawling.

The weird part is given the stated design mission of the Tremor and the Raptor and how a Torsen diff works it makes more sense for it to be in the Raptor than the Tremor.

The FX4 gets at least one extra drive mode, and I think the Tremor gets one more, and the Raptor gets another (Baja)

I saw a guy on TFL special order a short bed single cab four-wheel drive regular F-150, no special packages and he somehow got them to add the torsen front end to his. I'm sure you can search it up on YouTube under TFL. I can't remember the title, that would make it much easier. But I wasn't aware that they weren't as good as I thought they were after reading one of the other members posting about it it's weaknesses. It might just be easier to get an aftermarket e-locker in the front.

It's a Ford Performance dealer installed option. So you can get it installed on just about any F150 4x4.

shoot.. ABS on the Tacomas/4Runners is amazing. i’ve seen a handful of videos of those 2 rigs laying down the pipe while in a hairy situation.
