There has been much discussion on the amount of charge the computer system puts into the 12VDC battery. I recently put a Voltmeter on my truck. What I'm seeing closely mimics the expected voltages if it were a flooded cell battery. In other words, my take is that the 12V battery is kept right about where the electrochemistry would call for it when on float. I see about 15.1VDC on a cold morning start up (eg temps at about 30ºF). It declines to around 14.x as things warm up. It finally plateaus around 13 VDC (Specifically 12.9 to 13.2VDC). These readings are right where they would be for a flooded cell battery being returned to 100% charge. We should note that the chemical potentials are exactly the same because the lead acid chemistry is the same in either a flooded cell or AGM cell battery.

It finally plateaus around 13 VDC (Specifically 12.9 to 13.2VDC).
Isn't proper float for AGM 13.2-13.8VDC?

ergo 12.9VDC = boo!(October lingo)

No, 13.2VDC plus or minus... 12.9 VDC is well within the data scatter. 13.8 is too high for floating... Boo yourself... :)
Unless you go with a quality manufacturer and their recommendations...Double Boo back to you...

CHARGING OPTIMA® AGM BATTERIES

OPTIMA YELLOWTOP® CHARGING INFORMATION
The following charging methods are recommended to ensure a long battery life. Always use a voltage-regulated charger, with voltage limits set as described below.

YELLOWTOP Type: D51 & D51R - D35 – DS46B24R - D75/25 - D34 – D34/78 - D27F - H6 - H7
These batteries are dual-purpose. They are designed for engine start and cyclic applications and for use in vehicles with large accessory loads.

Recommended charging information:
  • Alternator:
    • 13.65 to 15.0 volts, no amperage limit.
  • Battery Charger:
    • 13.8 to 15.0 volts, 10 amps maximum, for approximately six to twelve hours.
  • Cyclic Applications:
    • 14.7 volts, no current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 125°F (51.7°C). When current falls below one amp, finish with two-amp constant current for one hour.
  • Rapid Recharge:
    • Maximum voltage 15.6 volts (regulated), no current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 125°F (51.7°C). Charge until current drops below one amp.
  • Float Charge:
    • 13.2 to 13.8 volts, one amp maximum current, time indefinite (at lower voltage).
    • Strictly adhere to all limits.
*13.2 - 13.8VDC for a quality direct replacement AGM.

Say what you want, but the factory 12V charging strategy of a Powerboost that doesn't get driven daily is inadequate.

However Ford is far from the only manufacturer that has 12V battery charging issues with Hybrids or even EV's.

Lots of Forums discussing 12V battery woes on high tech vehicles.

I have one or two.
Trickle chargers I use if/when I let it sit for a while.

I have to use a similar "strategy" for other vehicles that I don't drive often enough as well.

You're just pain wrong. Go lookup the electrochemistry of a lead acid battery. It is 13.2VDC, periond exclamation point. Where the set points of an alternator/generator are placed is a different matter. All of those other things you cite are operating setpoints of equipment (eg alternators, etc). And all of the above are not the zero float point of the battery. How's it feel to be wrong?

I did the goading. For example I found the absorbed glass mat used in the Motorcraft AGM changes the lead to acid ratio ever so slightly and thus rendering Gros Ventres’ calculations moot. ?
