Based on what was said it’s possible but annoying. My friend has an 18 platinum and said a bunch of times he wishes he had a button on the hvac panel. I ended up getting the digital one from Tasca for a little over $100

I agree. How would you know if the steering wheel has the element in it?
I’ll have to look when I get home, but I think there’s an extra connector from the steering wheel to the SCCM if is has heat

At about 2:10 in @superfordman's outstanding video, he's pointing at a connector that would not logically be present in a non-heated steering wheel. It also wouldn't make much sense for that connector to be present, but wired to nothing. That, I think, is how one might get a clue - but some disassembly required. Should be fun. I've never removed an airbag before. What could possibly go wrong?

So here’s my 5 cent backyard mechanic question,

Can I just buy the wheel itself, no clock spring, no fancy control panel, no forscan. Fish a wire through the steering column and tap into a hot wire somewhere, add a rocker switch like the old days and give myself a heated wheel.

or is it possible that there’s already a hot wire available since it seems adding the clock spring gives you +12V?

I appreciate all you guys trying to do it factory style though!

I will wait for all the laughs coming my way lol

I don’t see why not. The smarts of module turn off after x min. You’d have to do manually hit the switch.

ahhh I see! I could possibly integrate a circuit into the button that stays on for 10 minutes or something

I guess I’m wondering if anyone’s taken their wheel off how hard it would be to get a wire down through there?

I had the same thought -can’t imagine the heating element was the shortage - and if not that would create a new steering wheel that they wouldn’t have had to.
My thoughts as well. I find it hard to believe they'd come up with a whole different set of part number wheels for just minus the heating elements, but it is Ford. Watch, if the wheels where heat ready, then they'd only credit you back $30 for the rest of the missing components ?

Thanks, yep just take your airbag off quick and give a look. That's essentially how I ran mine for a while before I got everything hooked up, the steering wheel heat connector just plugged into the empty connector on the clockspring. The connector mold is there of course, just no terminals in it.

Maybe you "could" but that is a very long shot. You pretty much have to go through the clockspring somehow, or else your going to have wires getting twisted around everytime you turn the wheel if to go straight to the steering wheel heat connector. Remember its 2 wires into the SCCM but then 4 wires out to the wheel for the two elements. Plus the SCCM regulates the power quite a bit, without it, just imagine putting a coil wire on a 12v battery, it heats up pretty quick and that is what you'd be doing.

Ya only heated wheel equipped trucks come with the right SCCM. Don't waste your money!!! Just get one second hand like I did, $130. Here is the listed I just snagged those pics from. They're even very modular so you can remove the power telescoping controls and even put your turn signal stalk right back if you want.

Ah! So i was worried about my vehicle not having power telescoping controls. It's possible to just unbolt that section and put my original wiper control back?

The orange brown colored adapter is it.
Does that come with the heated steering wheel or is it an extra purchase with wires? So far I am only seeing the following required:
- heated steering
- clock spring
- hvac if you want hw button
- 2 wire connector to run to back of clock spring

I have a 22 xlt reg cab 8inch screen and I’m trying to do the hsw icon on screen and on vehicle type on the apim module it does not call out superduty, can someone please help me on this. I’ve already got everything on the way sccm was purchased on eBay used , raptor steering wheel, and all the pins and connector to make this work
I've got the same 8" screen did you ever get yours going??

The power wire is hot with the key on to the SCCM, then that is what controls the actual elements in the steering wheel.
I just finally understood what you meant here! The SCCM just needs +12V and typically people are getting that from the BCM, but you could just use another fused source since the SCCM controls the wheel.

I didnt realize the SCCM has a circuit board in it!

I'm gonna go for the full meal deal install with the SCCM and wheel! Just want to figure out first if my lame 8" screen will work with the soft button lol

To the best of my knowledge it is actually required that you get an SCCM with the steering wheel controls because the heated steering wheel is not in any trim that does not have the powered tele/tilt wheel. So you would simply remove it
