Good advice. I’m running a 34 (295/70R17), it comes factory with a 33 (275/70R18) so I’m only marginally larger in the tire. I like the look, and going to a 35 is a waste.4.10 would put you back very close to the factory overall gear ratio at the ground. From 33 to 35 inch tires is essentially 10% change.
It’s rather debatable if that would be worth the cost. Personally, drivability will be better, efficiency will be better, mileage probably be better. My thought is it it’s gonna be better on the transmission.
I haven’t priced gears in quite a while. Bearings have not been getting cheaper over the years. Not sure if the shop you choose will replace bearings or not. When I used to run Jeeps back in the 90s, shops would charge between 350 to 500 just for the labor. A set of gears & shop prices are quite a bit more now. I can see the labor for each axle being close to double that. I know the front axle is quite a bit more work than simply replacing the gear set with the axle housing in the vehicle
As far a gears go, 4.10s weren’t offered by my ford performance dealer, only 4.56. Normally I wouldn’t care about having a shop do this but I want to keep my warranty (gears don’t fail, but I don’t want some grease monkey leaving me stranded in the boonies).
Labor for a job like this is hefty. I think I said above, ford quoted me north of $5000. $3500 of that is labor. I don’t remember.
I agree with the transmission concern, a lot of people are throwing huge tires on their nice trucks because all the extra gears in these new transmissions. ALOT of Tundra guys have been stuffing 37s on with 3.31s ?. Can’t wait for all those transmissions to blow.
