Hello all, I have the Whipple Stage 2 Gen 6 on my 25 RCSB 4WD. Got a tune from OZ but I get a little knock around 2800 RPM from the start. It goes away pretty quick though. All I have available is 91 pure gas. I put some octane booster in and logged it again and the knock is about 1/2 of what it was (.7). Does anyone regularly run octane booster? Also, I've heard the Traction Control can cause this, even though I've pushed and held the button. I understand that doesn't really turn it completely off. Just not sure if I should worry about this and keep trying to find a solution, or if this is just how it is. Thanks.

If you have a knock in the tune and you specifically said 91 octane when you ordered it, then the tune is not good. You should immediately contact the tuner and explain the problem. You’ll probably either need to data log to show them the problem or they might already be aware and have an updated tune. But I personally would not be pushing it at all with a known issue that requires the knock sensors to save your engine. This is especially true if you even add octane booster and still have a knock.

For reference I have a stage two Whipple gen 6 on my truck also. 91 octane and no knock. And this isn’t my first supercharged vehicle.

Thanks for the reply. The tuner thinks its a false knock. Only happens about 2800 RPM from a dig. I just thought a little booster wouldn't hurt anything. We've looked all over/under the truck and can't find anything thats touching or rubbing. From what I have learned, if it was fuel related it would be prevalent thru the run.

I’m not a tuner and don’t know much about a false knock situation in software. But if you feel it or hear it as I’m assuming you are, then I would be surprised if it’s a false knock.

octane booster definitely shouldn’t hurt but unless your racing or going for max hp all the time, it’s a waste of money imho. My gut in your situation is that at 2800 rpm, it’s max load in your situation and that’s why you’re getting knock. Are you having this trouble on multiple tanks of fuel? That should rule out fuel if you’re getting top tier fuel and it’s different tanks. But again, I’m not a tuner and don’t pretend to know everything or anything at times.

I had a partial tank when we started the tune and have filled up since. I logged it with the Whipple tune and it was there. I'm not a tuner either so I'm feeling a little lost in this. Here is my log with and without the octane booster.

Log with the booster did lessen it but hard to tell if its false knock or not. My advice in this case would be to run your tank down fairly low and go throw 3-5 gallons of Sunoco 260 GT or other equivalent brand of race fuel in it. If the knock goes away you know for sure its a tuning issue, if you still have its safe to say its false.

Joker45 was giving you some sound advice, around 2800 you are putting a great amount of load on the motor and its more subjective to knock. I would take it easy until you can determine if its false or real. While you do have knock sensors you are doing damage every time the engine detonates, if its knocking its only a matter of time before irreversible damage is done.

Pump gasoline is hit or miss, for this matter I absolutely ran a octane booster every single tank in all of my boosted applications. If you can afford it throw a fuel system in your truck and go Ethanol, basically 0 chance of knock and you will pick power up EVERYWHERE :). If this is not an option then dial the tune in on pump gas with no booster and then add it for insurance.

Sounds good. I'll see I can find some 260 GT and try that. Thanks for the guidance.
