Is it better to buy the extended warranty at or shortly after purchase of a new F150 or wait until the factory warranty is about to expire?

I would imagine it's better at purchase for ability to finance in if that's what you're doing and you can probably get better length of time/lower deductibles etc. It only kicks in after the factory warranty anyway.

I waited until 6 months before my factory warranty was going to expire. I wanted to see how much we drove the F150, how the truck performed overall, and if we were going to be in the market for a new whip to replace the F150 by then. I finally extended the plan for 84 mos/100K miles.

I’ve had my truck 2 years and realize I’m going to keep it much longer, so I’ll be purchasing one soon

After 12 months there is a small extra fee like $50. Nothing else added until after 36k and you can still get it even later with a dealer inspection.

I do believe Granger posted recently that Ford will increase cost of ESP again this year. It does go up like everything else with inflation. So that might be a factor to consider.

One clear benefit of buying when you first get the truck is the option of getting 'Enhanced First Day Rental'.. That pays $60.00 instead of $40.00 and automatically kicks in if and when you drop your truck off at the dealership for covered warranty service. A loaner during the first 3-36 warranty period is NOT automatic but is subject to 'availability' by the servicing dealer. Get a sleazy dealer by accident? That will protect you. Same with key fob coverage. I was absolutely shocked what Honda wanted for a fob and programming when my wife thought she lost hers. I've read horror story's about dealers wanting to keep your truck for days just to work it in or waiting for parts.

I assume one does not need to pay the deductible on their ESP if it is running simultaneously with the 3/36 warranty, but the deductible would need to be met to trigger the enhanced first day rental option?

I don't think so..There is no deductible during the 3-36. Enhanced First day rental is it's own coverage and makes it automatic to get when you drop it off for any warranty work. It's optional coverage.

"Days" is not a horror story. It's true. When I make an appt at my dealer for a specific day, they don't start the work until the next day or 2 days later. Then have it for 2-3 days, sometimes over a weekend. They are annoyed when I call for an update because they've not provided one and only want to communicate via the crappy text system. In a follow up after the last survey the advisor asked me to change my answers.

That's not to hijack to thread (but I might have...sorry...) but if getting an extended AND you want to stick with the dealer AND they actually do the work when they committed AND provide a loaner, then it might be worth it to you. Personally, I think it's a testimate to quality by pitching an extended warranty before you leave the lot.

Consumer Report says "no" to an extended warranty. But they point out reasonable caveats:

https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-repair/get-an-extended-warranty-for-your-car-a1570471227/

I plan to go back to my regular shop after my warranty runs out in Aug. And it's only a 30-min walk instead of 45...

FWIW: most of the 9 times I've been in with my new truck in 2.5 years have been module updates. There are other threads about that if you're willing to DIY.

That’s what I’m going to do. This time. They quoted me $6500 the other day.

The best time in FL is when you have access to an address outside the state. Family or friend outside of FL or CA and then use that address to buy an extended warranty (ESP) from Granger or Ziegler. Only purchase an authentic Ford ESP and you will probably pay less than half shopping online. Good luck.

Seems that insofar as Genuine Ford ESP's Florida laws don't allow room for meaningful price competition / negotiation / discount or buying alternatives.

You can thank the powerful Florida auto dealer lobbying association and the legislators they influence for that decidedly consumer-unfriendly situation.
