2024 F150 Lariat 4x4 SuperCrew 3.5 EB 5.5'
We did our first ferry trip with our 2024 F-150 Lariat and it was a major nuisance with unwanted alarms. I tried disabling the motion sensors in settings, and also tried "ask on exit", and also tried locking it without using the key fob (suggested by ferry staff). I finally had to just leave the truck unlocked to stop recurring alarms on the 90 minute ferry ride (Port Angeles WA to Victoria CAN on the Coho). The recurring message in the Ford app on my phone was:

"F-150's security system has detected vehicle inclination and triggered the alarm at (date/time)"
I found something in the manual that said disabling the motion sensor would also disable the inclination sensor, but I didn't work for me. The only option I found available in settings is motion sensors on/off -- and that didn't prevent the issue.

Do other F-150 owners have trouble with alarms on a ferry ride? Has anyone found a way to avoid the issue other than leaving the truck unlocked? We had quite a bit of luggage in the back seat, so this was an undesirable solution.

That happened to us on our ferry ride to the San Juan Islands, WA this May. The alarm went off about 4 times before they had to call us back to the parking deck over the PA system. How embarrassing! I just ended up turning off the alarm. Vehicles are packed so tightly on a ferry that theft isn’t really a consideration, or so I’d like to believe. My Ford Pass logged the incidents but I didn’t bother looking at the phone while on the upper deck. If I had, I could have unlocked it remotely to kill the alarm.

BTW, even at home during a windy day, if I crack the moonroof just a bit, the alarm triggers too. 🙄

Here is the 2024 Ford F-150 manual reference that links the inclination sensor with the motion sensor. Both should be on or off together per this information. However, even with motion sensor off, the inclination alarms keep happening during a ferry ride. So it seems either this information is incorrect or something is wrong with my truck.

What are the Alarm Security Levels

You can select two levels of alarm security, motion sensors on and motion sensors off.

Motion Sensors On
Motion sensors on is the standard setting.
In motion sensors on, all equipped sensors are on when you arm the alarm.
Note: Do not arm the alarm with motion sensors on if passengers, animals or other moving objects are inside your vehicle.

Motion Sensors Off
In motion sensors off, the interior sensor and the inclination sensor are off when you arm the alarm. All the other equipped sensors activate when you arm the alarm in this mode.

Ford trucks in the higher trim levels and German Automobiles are the ferry workers bane of existence! Had that happen with our Lariat, had to leave it unlocked. Was on an outside ferry deck and it was dark, so the flashing lights were worse than the horn sounding for the ferry crew.

My local dealer had this initial input on the unwanted alarms on the ferry...

What happened (the “why”)
Your 2024 F-150’s alarm has two layers:
  1. Perimeter (doors/hood/tailgate) – triggers if an entry point is opened or forced.
  2. Interior/Inclination sensors (motion & tilt) – look for cabin movement, glass-break, or the truck being tilted/towed.
On a ferry, the boat’s roll/pitch and vibration make the inclination/motion sensors think the vehicle is being tampered with or towed, so the alarm re-triggers while armed.
Two easy ways to avoid ferry/travel false alarms
Option A: Use “Perimeter Only” (recommended)

This keeps doors/hood/tailgate protected but disables motion/tilt while you’re on the ferry.
  • On the touchscreen (SYNC 4):
Settings → Vehicle → Alarm SystemSecurity Sensors → select Perimeter Only.
Then lock the truck with the fob or door switch.
  • In FordPass app (if enabled):
Vehicle → Settings/Alarm → choose Perimeter Only, then lock the vehicle.
Option B: Don’t arm the interior sensors (quick method)
  • Sit in the driver seat with ignition off, set Alarm to Perimeter Only (as above), exit, and lock.
  • If you can’t access settings quickly: lock with the key blade in the fob (driver door). This typically arms perimeter without waking interior motion, but behavior can vary—Option A is the sure thing.
If the alarm goes off mid-trip
  • Press Unlock on the fob (or start the vehicle) to silence immediately.
  • Once the ferry docks and the truck is stationary, you can re-lock normally.
When else to use Perimeter Only
  • While on ferries/trains, in car washes, on vehicle transporters, or when leaving pets/passengers inside (motion will set it off).
  • If windows are left open or a sunshade flutters inside the cab.
Quick pre-ferry checklist
  1. Open Settings → Vehicle → Alarm System → Security Sensors → Perimeter Only
  2. Lock the truck with the fob or door switch
  3. On arrival, switch back to Full Guard if you want motion/tilt re-enabled
Extra tips
  • Silencing quickly: Unlock with the fob or start the truck.
  • Battery health: Frequent alarm events can drain the 12V battery over long transports; Perimeter Only prevents this.

After I told them my "Settings / Vehicle / Alarm" options were different than they described, they gave this input. I will try using the manual key method if I ever take the ferry again. Does anyone know if there is a planned release date for the Sync update that will fix this?

Why the Alarm Went Off

Your Lariat is equipped with Ford’s Full Guard Alarm System, which protects the truck two ways:
  1. Perimeter sensors – watch the doors, hood, and tailgate.
  2. Interior and inclination sensors – detect motion or tilting that could mean towing or intrusion.
On the ferry, constant movement, pitch, and vibration caused those interior/tilt sensors to think the vehicle was being towed or rocked by force. The system responded as designed by sounding the alarm.

Why You Don’t See “Perimeter Only” in Settings

Some 2024 Lariats show this toggle under
Settings → Vehicle → Alarm System → Security Sensors.
However, depending on SYNC 4 software level and option package, that menu may not appear even though the system has motion sensing. A software update or enabling through Ford Pass may restore it later this year, but it isn’t visible on all builds right now.

How to Work Around It

  1. Manual-lock method (recommended for ferry travel)
    • Use the metal key blade inside your fob to lock the driver’s door.
    • This secures the doors but does not arm the motion/tilt sensors, preventing false triggers.
  2. If using the fob, expect the alarm to arm fully. If it sounds during transit, simply press Unlock or start the truck to silence it.
  3. Post-trip: Lock normally again to re-enable full protection.
  4. Frequent travelers: We can program a “transport mode” through IDS/FDRS that temporarily disables the interior sensor if needed (about 0.3 hr labor).

When to Use This Tip

  • Ferries, trains, or vehicle carriers
  • Car washes or service bays with vibration
  • When leaving pets or passengers inside briefly
Your system is functioning properly; it simply interpreted ferry motion as tampering. Using the key-lock method or, when available, selecting Perimeter Only before boarding will prevent recurrence.
