Transmission Concern

Good evening everyone.

Is anyone concerned about the transmission issues with the 10 speed. We owned a 2014 Focus with the recalled transmission and that was a nightmare. Not interested in dealing with that again on a brand new vehicle.
Does anyone know if all 10 speed F150’s are affected or it’s just luck of the draw?

I’m not too worried about it. The Ford Focus PowerShift transmission issues were notorious and part of a class action lawsuit. The issues pertaining to the Focus involved faulty control modules and the use of a dry dual clutch plate that was used for the sake of fuel efficiency. As you probably know, those components caused the majority of the problems.


The F-150’s new transmission was developed jointly by FoMoCo and GM and is currently used in many different popular vehicle platforms. This particular transmission also uses a series of dual clutches, and from what I can tell they are classified as “wet”.

Everything I’ve read for the F-150’s new ten speed automatic transmission from various sources and reviews the past couple years have given it high praise.

I have had 3 of Fords 10 speed transmissions now and they have all been rough shifting unrefined trash! My 2016 Fusion killed a transmission at 20,000 miles and the rebuild was worse than the original. My 2018 F150 had a transmission that felt like it was trying to destroy itself with how hard it downshifted to the point I was just deleting 10th gear because it was so violent when it downshifted along with the harsh 3 to 5 shift. My 2021 F150 is also developing these same shift issues which Ford will say is normal to avoid fixing anything...

I am not impressed with the 10 speed. The 6 speed in my 2012 Lincoln Navigator was far smoother.

It's hard to beat ZF's 8HP transmission that are featured on Rams along with many other makes.

I'm LOVING my 10-speed!

It sounds like an Airliner taxiing down the runway and when I put it in "sport mode" it's just and absolute MONSTER!

The 5.0 in a RCSB in Sport Mode is down right SACRY!

My mind has a difficult time keeping up with where I was and where I wanted to be by the time I'm already there.

But... I got the Premium ESP so if it lands on the street in a pile of metal... it's NOT "my" problem. ....IT'S "FORD's"!

I like it and think it’ll be reliable. The focus debacle was stupid and a poor design combined with cheap parts. It was also an entirely different type of transmission all together. None of the components in the 10 speed are similar. Keep in mind ford trucks are their bread and butter. They put all their time and money into designing these things, and very little in the rest of their fleet. Also, the trans was jointly developed by ford and GM, I like to think that the two put the best of what they know together to create a pretty bulletproof trans when used appropriately
