Hi, I’m new here but I’ll be as specific as possible, here we go. I have a 2021 Lariat 4x4 5.0 3.31 gear ratio truck, I am first owner. At first I had the clunk at 4-5-6 on the 10 speed. Later it disappeared and then now (after 3 years) the truck clunks at from first gear to second/third. This is most common on cold but it still happens every now and then when warm (operating temps) I have told my dealership but they said it’s normal but I said no, this is not the clunk, it’s a 2-3k then shift the third clunk. I have seen videos about CDF drum and that most problems are seen when cold. I’m at 45k miles and I still have my powertrain warranty and I want to know what to do from here. I am trying to get a video of it when warm so I can show the dealership but camera out nothing happens but when away it does it. It’s like first gear is trying to shift but it can’t choose between second or third. Yes I did the TSB and this isn’t the first time I reported the trans problem.

I had the same issue with my 2022 Ranger. They replaced the CDF drum and that helped with the hard shifting with 3-4-5 gears but still had the clunking with 1st gear. Clunking from reverse to drive and drive to park. Then the hard shifting came back after just 1000 miles. Traded it in for a 2024 F-150 and this 10R80 is a dream compared to the Ranger’s.

I’m not a mechanic but I don’t think all the hard shifting was good for the transmission. I wanted Ford to replace the transmission instead of replacing the CDF drum. My old Ranger sold in less than a week and it’s someone else’s problem.

Hi there! Would you send us a private message with your VIN and dealership name and location? I’d like to look into this concern on my end.

Have you checked the fluid level (a PITA to do, I realize)? Could be low on fluid-many start out low from factory it seems and after 45k miles even lower.

I have never thought or heard about this as I’m around 45k miles.

Was it something like this though?
