Tow mirror dimmer than passenger side mirror

My driver side tow mirror has a tint, and what looks like a couple of black lines surrounding the main mirror glass. The passenger side isn’t like this. Is there a reason for that?

Supposedly the passenger takes less direct light. It is by design. Who knew.

Pretty common that only the driver’s side dims. I guess they figure it’s the more annoying side.
