I'm of the same opinion as @Rinn69 here. Personally I'd save up a little more and buy something from one of the more reputable companies.

However, to answer your questions: The fiberglass cover should be a little lighter vs the aluminum, if that's a concern. It could be more likely to crack though if you abuse it or get caught in hail. The aluminum panels on my Leer folding cover feel pretty sturdy, but I'm not sure how the covers you are looking at compare to that. It is heavy though, but not so much I couldn't install it myself with a little effort.

I see.. you're prolly right about the fiberglass being light weight and such.. the other one I posted is listed as a heavy duty cover and its aluminum... I appreciate your input

The best one out there is the Leer HF650M or the Ford branded version. Priced comparably to a Bakflip. Has 4 panels instead of 3 so the bed camera doesn't get blocked. Better warranty and very responsive Cust Service.

Look on FB Marketplace and see what’s nearby. People trade their trucks, buy a toolbox etc. They are usually plentiful.

I had a $1000 Bakflip G2 that was ready for the garbage heap after about 9 years. Among other things the wire release crimps gave out, and the aluminum started to dent around the knobs on top over the screws that secured the bulkhead end from underneath. The prop rod also gave out.

On my F150 I started with a 650$ Rugged Brand cover that barely ever let a drop in and never gave me a single problem in 3 years but I wanted that full bed access back. I gave it away randomly to a dude who will probably make good use of it for many more years.

I now have a $1100 Leer HF350M which I'm OK with now that it's properly adjusted but I see more weaknesses in terms of long term vulnerability than I had with the 600 dollar Rugged brand cover. It's not perfect but it's getting the job done. Down to only a trickle through a few places in the bed in heavy rain. It releases with something other than a cord from just one side and it folds all the way up.

I'd say covers that fold up 2/3rds and come with the standard tension clamps on both sides are probably the simplest and most reliable but lacking the convenience of the full bed access stuff. I've seen good reviews on youtube and in forums on the OEDRO stuff so would not hesitate to try one if that's the style I was in the market for. They are both probably Chinese knock offs of name brand stuff with small detail changes. Bunch of different manufacturers make that same style of cover in aluminum or FRP, with tension clamps, and with minor detail changes to set them apart. They'll change the seal a bit, have a different tailgate seal, maybe a different way to tuck the clamps when you fold it. Design a slightly different clamp maybe.

Pick your poison, pay 900 bucks for the same thing but with a Better warranty from Extang if you like. It has been my experience that whatever you buy, the weight adds up with each fold and by the final one to go upright if it's a full access cover it's a challenge from the ground but much easier done facing the back of the cab standing in the bed. My Leer is FRP and I can get it up againt the cab from the side a bit easier than I could my bakflip. But I can shoulder press 60 pound dumbells too.

Either would probably be uncomfortably heavy for many people by the 3rd fold without lifting it from the bed.

Very good insight.. I've spent too much on this truck and as of now I am only "allowed" to stay under $450... the cover I truly want is the Bakflip with the rails so I can install the cross bars for a bike rack or roof top tent but its $1350++ and simply out of the range so its down between these to and if you were forced to choose, would you go FRP or the aluminum?

Aluminum tonneaus in the 1k range are usually skinny panels sandwiching
Some sort of FRp type core. You're not getting some big thick beefy piece of aluminum. I'd do FRP. My Leer is FRp. The aluminum sandwiched fiberglass core ones I had did not impress me on resilience.

Amazon has the OEDRO FRP hard tri fold for $379 (5.5 ft bed).

question for all you guys....how much of an inconvenience is it to remove a tri-fold when you want to use the whole bed for loading?

Trying to decide between a hard tri-fold and a soft roll-up. I don't ever plan on keeping anything valuable in the back, so the minimum security of a roll up is not an issue. Also live in Phoenix, so don't have to worry about the weight of snow....just want to get one for a clean look and to keep debris out of the bed.

Any thoughts are welcome...thanks!

It's possible to remove my Leer by unscrewing the 2 clamps, but it's heavy and awkward to move around by myself. I believe it's ~70 lbs. The popular folding covers like the Backflip and Leer all fold upright with prop rods so you can use the whole bed without removing the cover. Only downside is that it obscures your back window.
