Small Green Electrical Connector on Rear Diff. What is it for?

2021 F-150 Sport with Electronic locking diff.

I noticed a small green male electrical connector near my rear diff that was not connected and was just dangling. I found a female connection attached to the top of my rear diff that the plug fit perfect, so I plugged it back in.

What is that connector for? I suspect I've been driving for some time with it disconnected. I don't go off road, so have only put the vehicle in FWD on very limited occasion and didn't notice any ill effects that I was aware of.

I am taking the truck into the dealer to have them check out a loud "clunking" sound I occasionally get that sounds like it's coming from my drive shaft.

I would think it is th connection for the diff lock..

The usual abbreviation is 4WD. FWD is typically used to reference front wheel drive.

I would guess that sensor is either the diff lock or a temp sensor.

You plugged the connector into the holder meant for non-locking trucks. The plug should go to the diff lock connector here:
