So when I got my truck I'd put in 4wd to see itbworked and I was stopped and it had me put in neutral to engage. Does that mean we can't shift to 4wd on the fly. Haven't tried it didn't want to possibly mess something up. I figured you guys that use 4wd often would know more than me. I have a 23 stx fx4 5.0 Screw if any of that matters.

I think because you were stopped, the truck wanted the drvetrain to be able to move so the system can mesh all the gears without grinding or jamming anything. I have switched into 4 WD High while moving with no issue. Have also switched transmission settings that automatically put the truck into 4 WD High without a problem. Your speed is the only limiting factor when engaging the 4 WD. That information is in the manual. Switching to 4WD Low the truck must be stopped.

The truck needs to be moving to shift into 4x4. I'm constantly changing from 2-wheel to 4-wheel.

You can go into 4H while moving, but if something isn’t lined up correctly at a stop it occasionally will ask you to pull forward etc. 4L requires neutral first. Another fyi is that the locking rear axle automatically shuts off after 25 MPH.

See I thought you could do it while moving but didn't want to tear up a new truck without asking first. Lol. My last truck was like 45-55 mph in 4h and 25 or so in 4l. I haven't seen what new one is I'd assume it'll be around the same but want to find it in manual to verify.
Thats good to know on rear locker thanks.

I have never seen a truck you can shift to 4 low while moving greater than a few mph. 4Hi should be at any speed, 4L requires neutral and less than 3mph

O no I meant thats the speed you could go while in the 4h or 4l. Lol. Maybe I should've been more clear. Yeah the max recommended speed were those or something close to that.
I'll have to read up on the max speeds for 4h and 4l on this truck to see. Which it's just knowledge for me as I hardly ever use 4wd in the first place but it'll be good info to know for if or when I do need to use it

Ohh sorry I thought you meant for shifting. So there is no speed limit to 4Hi. 4Lo would be gear limited. I have no reason to go very fast in 4Lo but if I had to guess it could probably do like 55?

O wow I didn't think there's no speed limit in even 4h. 4l I like you have no reason to omgo fast in.

The issue is that unless the gears are perfectly lined up they cannot engage if you're stopped. So if you're moving they will engaged when they pass each other in the right alignment as the solenoid (I think) applies pressure and they slip together when able. You can also get a warning that 4WD has not disengaged if the gears have bound up. In this case you should stop and put it in reverse and backup a few yards to unwind the binding... (NA if you have Fulltime 4WD).

Out of curiosity, what was your last truck? Model and trim level?
O I'd bought a little 2017 nissan frontier sv 4wd. It's been a while that I'd read that so my exact speeds may be different. Lol. But I do remember reading there was a speed limit in 4h and 4l.
