Can Google maps be accessed on the Sync 4 screen from an Iphone? If so how do you add the app to the screen?

Yes, absolutely. I use the GoogleMaps from my iPhone all the time via CarPlay. You can also readily use Waze.

I do t use the Ford Navigation anymore, not since it mid-directed me to NSA HQ where I was met by several very nice gentlemen brandishing automatic weapons who conducted a vehicle search and a personal background check. And I had only had the truck for 1 day!
