The usual story I hear about 4wd noises is that they don't disengage properly and so you get noise in 2wd. I'm having the opposite - now that it's finally snowing, when I engage 4wd I get a scraping noise. Not like grinding gear teeth, a higher pitched scrape that sounds like smooth pieces of steel rubbing (at first I thought it was a bent guard rubbing on the brake rotor until I fiddled with the 4wd). Once I get it out of 4wd the noise goes away. Note that I didn't have that problem during the summer and fall, just started now that it's getting cold.
I believe it was having trouble disengaging from 4wd when the noise started. It was night and colder when I first noticed the noise it was happening in both 4wd and 2wd, but now fiddling with it a bit during the day it only happens in 4wd.
Would love some input before I start pulling things apart (or likely paying someone to pull things apart because I hate working on cars in the cold).
