This time last year, I painted my chrome mirror caps and my Platinum applique. I thought I read up on everything and picked the correct materials, but a year later, I was wrong. The primer/paint was starting to pull away from the chrome coating and the coating itself was starting to pull away from the plastic on the mirror caps. It seemed with the rock chips, water was getting behind the primer which was evident when I started peeling the primer/paint. The air hose set at 155PSI made short work of removing the primer/paint.

I know I can easily buy mirror caps that are ready for paint, but I needed to know how to resolve the issue if my applique started to peel due to it already being primed/painted and the nightmare it would be to remove all of the primer/paint.

After hours of research, this is what I ended up with.

*****Disclaimer***** I am NOT responsible for anything you do! Proceed at your OWN risk!!! This is acid. If you do not take the necessary precautions, this can cause burns, respiratory issues, eye damage, etc. WEAR YOUR PPE!*****

Mix 3 parts of Hydrogen Peroxide with 1 part of Muratic Acid. Always add acid to water so in this case, add MA to HP. Because math isn't my strong subject, I bought 3-32 ounce bottles of HP. I poured them into a 5 gallon bucket. PUT ON YOUR PPE! At this point, I took everything outside! I used a funnel and filled one of the empty bottles of HP with MA. Hence, 3 HP to 1 MA. I poured the MA in slowly to the bucket. One quick swirl of the bucket and I was ready.

***** Make the bucket as safe as possible in case of nosey neighbor kids, pets, etc.*****

I dropped the parts in. Every hour for the first 4 hours, I rotated the parts. 12 hours later, most of the material was removed. I moved the parts around once again and came back an hour later. Everything looked great so it was time to make everything safe. I slowly added baking soda to the bucket of parts. This in and of itself will cause a chemical reaction. Once it is neutralized, you can remove your parts and rinse off with water.

At this point, you can prepare the parts for painting.

Yeah, the actual chrome needs to be removed as you've done. You can get higher concentration of peroxide in the form of hair bleach or a pool chemical called baquacil shock. Those non-chrome mirror covers are cheap and would have been easier to just buy and prep/paint vs having to remove them from the truck for a couple days.

Looks good!

You are correct, however, I'm expecting the paint to fail on my Platinum applique at some point and it was a cheap experiment to try for when that does occur.

I was out a little time and $15.

Acid + oxidizer is a spicy combo so be careful playing with it. If you can't find an economical tub for its size, consider building a bath out of 2x4s or 6s and then laying in the thickest plastic liner you can find over it to build the pool.

This is a 25% concentration which might help w/ the larger pot you'll need for the tailgate
