I've often wondered why Ford doesn't just publish a cold fluid level as well as the 205-216F level.
I have to assume that they would if it were a failproof technique. There must be something critical to the volume of fluid in the pan ONLY with the thermostat open?
Or just put an old school dipstick in it. Geez! If the thermostat wasn't open that might explain it, but I couldn't get it much hotter than 185. Would be nice if someone from Ford engineering who understands the design could chime in.

There's techniques to get the fluid temp up higher than 185F

Towing something is an obvious way, but not very convenient.
An extended drive can do it too. Could take 30 minutes or longer.

And finally you can do some brake torque-ing to get those final few degrees needed to follow the fluid check procedures.
