Power tailgate closes when I store the step(sometimes)?

Wondering if anyone else has had this experience or if this is how the tailgate step/auto tailgate is supposed to work? I don’t use the step much, but I have now had two times where when I store the step the tailgate closes automatically. Other times it does not close on its own. Truck is a 24 lariat. What’s supposed to happen?

I have to lift mine 4-6” to trigger the power close. Never had it trigger a close otherwise.

I have a 21 Platinum and have never experienced this and I use the step all the time.

Sounds like the sensor to activate close maybe not be connected correctly. You can hope it happens if you take it in for service or they will say nothing wrong. Seems by reading on here dealerships for the most part don’t go the little extra to look into it.

You aren't picking up the tailgate when going to stow the step are you?

I would remove the tailgate cover (if the switch is in the tailgate and not behind a taillight) and check to see if the tilt switch is loose or broken off its mount. Maybe a member can post where that switch is located. Pushing the step in may just shake the switch in the tailgate enough to trigger a close cycle.

I’d lean to what @imnuts suggested, You may lift the tailgate sufficiently in storing the step to activate the switch. It doesn’t take much of a lift for this to happen.
