What's going on everyone, just wanted to share my new on board air compressor setup for my truck. I was debating on getting an ARB dual air compressor but couldn't justify the price, so I was looking at the Smitty Built 2781 and the All Top ATACR180L. I ended up going with the All Top compressor, as it had a higher CFM rating.

As for the mounting, I was debating on putting it under the hood but was concerned about excess heat and running my air line all the way to the rear of the truck, where I wanted my outlet located. So I put the compressor where the jack was located behind the rear seat. I was gonna build an aluminum plate to mount it, but ended up using some 3/4" plywood with some heat reflecting tape. I removed the insulation behind the seat against the back wall of the truck to make a little extra room and keep the heat from the compressor combusting the fabric.

Now for the wiring of this thing. I have the compressor wired into my second battery mounted just below the rear of the cab. So I used the original grommet that was in the back of the truck and fished the wire down below. I installed a switch on the side panel behind the seat so it's easily accessible with the seat up or down. But in most cases the seat will be down anyways.

I ran my air line through the back wall of the truck by drilling a 7/8" hole, then fishing the air line down below. I zip tied the hose along the frame then along the bed cross membes, finally leading to my tank (4gal) where the spare tire went. I no longer need a spare tire as I had done a level with 35's almost two years ago now. Anyways, from the tanks I have an air line going to a connection port just under the rear bumper, where I can connect my 50' hose and do whatever I need, fill up tires, use a blow gun, or even run air tools (but probably not for too long).

Modification of the All Top air compressor:
So before buying the all top, I was set on buying the Smitty Built. So Googling around I found the "2781 mod". This modification is just installing a pressure switch into the pump and snipping some wires to allow the compressor to turn on or off when the pressure drops to 70psi or reaches 110psi. The compressor is rated to 150psi and just had a relief valve to purge excess pressure once it got to 150psi. So the thing would still be running when it was at max PSI, it's just going "pop pop pop" every second purging air. Totally annoying and definitely not safe for what I had planned to use it for. So all these modifications available for the Smitty Built compressor is doable on the All Top. So I spent about an hour soldering all new pipes and making everything fit in such a small spot. Did a bench top test first to make sure it would turn on and off at the desired pressure, and also make sure I had no leaks. All was good. So into the truck it went.

Anyways that's my write up on my installation. Nothing new as I know it's been done before on previous generation trucks and I'm sure on this generation, but just haven't seen anything showcasing all of this.

Just curious, does the All Top have an inline or internal fuse, and if so what's its amp rating?

I understand it has 'thermal protection', this is a different question relating to current-demand.

Great build, thanks for posting. Figured I'd share where I installed mine. I had a portable ARB Twin Compressor, but I got tired of having to remember to bring the case with me, and wanted to always have it in my truck.

I took the compressor out of the case and mounted it on the side of my bed next to the Pro Power Plugs, as it is sheltered from the elements under my Decked Drawer's. I drilled a hole into one of the support legs of the Decked, and mounted the air chuck on the Decked.

The power for the compressor is wired under the truck against the frame to my battery under the hood, and I've then got it wired to one of my switches on my SPOD Switch Panel inside the truck .

So it's a fuse on the motor itself (no idea the rating), but I threw in 50a resettable fuse inline as well. Just as a precaution. The compressor says it runs at 45a.

I really dig your setup, especially the rooftop tent and awning. I use my truck for work in construction to I can't permanently keep a tent over my bed. I had built a rail system over my bed to hold my bikes and a tent as well. But they're all removable, 8 bolts and the whole thing unmounts from the bed.

As for your battery, did you upgrade the factory battery to something larger? How do you find it handles all the extra load and constant battery drain when the truck is off. I had to install dual battery system with a manual override incase the main battery dies. I had my dash cams (on 24/7) which would kill my battery when the truck sat for 2+days. So I had to wire all my auxiliary parts into the second battery.

I don't have anything running off the battery when I'm off. My fridge is plugged into a Jackery that's inside my left drawer, and the Jackery is plugged into the truck outlets. My fridge runs off the Jackery when I'm parked, and it recharges when I'm driving.

I do have a 100Watt Solar Panel on the top of the tent, so if I am parked for an extended amount of time, I can plug that into the Jackery, but I haven't had to do that very often. Aside from my fridge, I don't have anything else pulling power when I'm parked aside from charging a couple phones every now and then.

Nice! I mounted mine there as well! I don’t have a tank so it’s just wired to the battery under the hood with an ANL fuse as well.

Do you have the solar panel wired into a charging system, or just plugged into a 12v cigarette outlet in the truck? I was debating on mounting a smaller solar panel on the roof behind the panoramic glass, so it doesn't obscure the view. Just wasn't sure if I wanted to plug it into a 12v plug, or wire it into the second battery with a solar charger.

Do you have a heat shield on your compressor? I removed mine for the photo, but I have it made with 1/8" aluminum to protect the seat material from getting hot and potentially catching fire.

That’s a great question, so far when airing up it hasn’t had to run enough to get too hot. I usually only run it with the seat down though.

Oh it's nothing fancy. When I decide I need to use it, it just plugs into my Jackery. Produces more power than the fridge uses if I'm parked at a camping spot for a few days.

Ok that makes sense. I've had it run for about 10 min constantly, and the pump is warm, but the copper and brass parts get extremely warm. But again that's excessive use. I only put the heat shield there in case I have cargo or a passenger on that seat and I can't lower it down to use it.

I'm gonna look into it a bit more and see what option is best here. Do you have any other inverters on the truck? Asides from the factory one.

VSS for solar

Vehicle specific solar is what they're called, and if you call them up they can build a custom setup for you too.

I have one on older jeep that doesn't get much use, and it charges the starting battery.

I have one for the new truck, just haven't installed it yet.
