Hey everyone, great forum here! I had to join and get some opinions/input on a pretty big issue with my '21 STX Screw involving the windshield leaking shortly after purchase on 4/29. It's a long story but I'll try to keep it as concise as possible without omitting details so bear with me if you will. Here's a timeline of my issues so far...
4/29 Purchased truck, life is good
5/3 Drove truck to work (night shift & got some rain overnight) leaving work in the morning, hit brakes and water rolls off the roof & starts dripping onto the dash right over the touchscreen. Waited until selling dealer opened at 8 AM and called to report the issue. Was told to bring the truck on Friday 5/7 to have their "windshield specialist" onsite to check it out
5/7 Took truck to dealer, "windshield specialist" is a 3rd party wind noise/leak repair guy who used a black sealant on the top center of the windshield to attempt to fix the leak. Overheard the "specialist" ask one of the service guys if this was the same truck he had worked on before. I was hesitant to go along with this but figured it must be a fairly normal procedure if the guy is there once a week. Left dealer after the "repair" and went to a restaurant where it starts raining. Needless to say the dash is wet again as soon as I got in the truck. Went back to dealership and showed my salesperson that it was leaking worse than before, as the "specialist" had already left. Was asked to reschedule another visit for the following week with the "windshield specialist". Got home and Googled my VIN, comes back with a window sticker to a dealer in West Virginia... starting to get a bit suspicious at this point.
5/8 Got up early, raining hard. Checked on the leak and found rainwater dripping and running down the inside of the windshield & behind the dash, along with a soaked dashtop and touchscreen. Got curious at this point & peeked under the headliner to discover the same black sealant that the "specialist" used all along the inside of the roof where it meets the glass. I was waiting at the dealership when they opened. Being a Saturday, no service department people onsite so I left the truck with assurance from sales & finance manager the truck would be put inside the shop for the weekend out of the weather. Finance manager verified truck was DX'd from a dealer in West Virginia. Starting to put 2 and 2 together now... I was given a used loaner truck to drive until leak was corrected.
5/10 Headed to dealer to meet with service manager and owner to show them the sealant patchwork I had found. Service manager agrees to rush order a windshield for the truck. I ask for an OASIS report because things really aren't adding up at this point... 2 items on OASIS report, 3/17/21 "Windshield replaced due to being cracked in transit" at the West Virginia dealer (truck has a blend date of 3/7/21 BTW) & 4/16/21 " Verified concern, Repair performed by "windshield specialist". Water tested, found leak in roof seam. Removed trim and headliner, located faulty seam. Resealed location, reinstalled headliner and trim. Water tested and recheck for leaks. All checks good after repair". At this point I'm livid... waited for the owner to arrive and showed him the sealant patchwork as well. Truck leaves the lot headed to glass repair shop while the owner is making some calls on sourcing a windshield. I express serious concern over being sold a known defective truck and not having any idea how much water damage could have already taken place behind the dash while the truck was sitting on 2 different lots over the past month & a half prior to me purchasing it. Went home to cool off, thought about it for about 2 hours and decided to open a buyback case with Ford Customer Service. Got my case number and informed the dealership owner that I would not be satisfied with the truck after what I've experienced so far. Later that afternoon the dealership owner calls to tell me the glass shop found that the windshield that was installed in West Virginia wasn't even correct for my truck, it had extra sensors that had no provision to hook up so they tucked the wires up into the headliner. Nothing surprises me at this point.
5/12 Ford Customer Service rep assigned to my case calls to let me know that a new windshield has been emergency shipped from the Ford plant for my truck and he will follow up with the dealer on Friday to see if they received/installed the windshield. No decision on my buyback case until possibly Monday of next week.
I know, hell of a second post on here & I apologize for the novel... but at this point it appears that the first dealer in West Virginia completely botched the first windshield replacement and the truck possibly had damage to the windshield channel. They should have refused delivery of the truck if the damage truly happened in transit to them as well. They then unloaded the truck on my dealer in a transfer. My dealer then wrongly attempted to have a "lot lizard" patch up the leak after realizing they got screwed in the swap with the West Virginia dealer, instead of pulling the windshield like they should have done to start with. I really feel like the responsibility should ultimately fall on both dealers for shady business practices & selling a known defective truck as new, but I know that's not how it works unfortunately. I did have the foresight to get pics/video of the leaks and the shoddy "sealant" job on the inside of the truck before taking it back that Saturday. Not sure if I have a shot at a buyback, but at this point I'm definitely not comfortable at all with electronic/electrical/safety equipment and possible water damage from over a month of rainwater intrusion. Virginia lemon law does state 3 or more unsuccessful repairs for the same issue, or greater than 30 days without the vehicle in one year. I should be up to 4 documented windshield related repairs with this new windshield coming from Ford on Friday, so I guess we'll see what my Customer Service rep says next week.
Any advice, thoughts, prayers, or similar past experiences on here? If so I'd love to hear it!
Thanks for giving me a place to vent about it here,
Gregg
