So I thought I had started a thread about this or added to one somewhere, but maybe that was a different forum.

Anyway, at some point since I got the truck (I have 9500 miles on it), I noticed a couple of things.

One, the steering wheel, when held straight, made the truck drive slightly left. I think that might have been happening from day 1, but it got worse over time.

Two, after driving for about 15 min from a cold start (overnight), an annoying random tapping noise would come from what sounded like from behind the steering wheel.

Three, about the same time as hearing that noise you could almost feel it in the steering wheel and the gas pedal, as if it were related or maybe just happening at the same time.

I needed an oil change so I thought I'd get this stuff looked at, at the same time. This is what they found. First, the service writer told me they were going to replace the driveshaft and start there. I found this a little odd but ok. I found it more odd that they were able to get a driveshaft in about a weeks time, given that I have heard that some have been waiting.

Turns out, it was a steering shaft they replaced. But that did not get rid of the noise. On further inspection, they found a tie rod nut was not properly fastened at the factory, causing the threads to get damaged and needing replacement. Still there was some noise present...a metallic noise. So they looked behind the instrument panel and found a bracket or something loose.

I just got the truck back after about 2 weeks. The noise is finally gone, truck drives straight, and everything is great again.

FWIW, the loaner truck I had, with about 5 miles on it since it came right off the trailer, also seemed to suffer from the misalignment issue, but hardly noticeable. If mine was like that one, I would not have mentioned it.

I thought I would post this in case someone else had an issue with the phantom tapping noise. I think steering shaft and tie rod was the main culprit, followed by the bracket. behind the dash.
