Need new tailgate, anyone have experience with changing over?

My father backed into my truck and now I need a new tailgate, bumper top step, and badging for the tailgate. I was quoted 2500+ from ford dealer to repair/replace. I have found that I can get a new painted tailgate from www.paintedoemparts.com for about 1300-1400. The bumper step and badging would add a few hundred more. My tailgate has the step and power open/close option. Has anyone changed over all of the hardware on a tailgate? Is it a huge pain or not too bad?

I do not have experience with the company. I did look into a replacement hood (hail damage). The comments I received was, "thats a big piece to ship and not get messed up". If you go through dealership, at least its on them. Taking tailgate off is easy, but replacing all the hardware etc and your time...I'd spend the extra $1000 to put the liability on someone else. Have you tried a body shop?

Definitely try a body shop vs the dealer, but I'd don't think I'd have a piece that large shipped to my house. Not that you can't do it yourself, it's the carriers I wouldn't trust to not damage it.

Did you look at used parts? Besides a junk yard or car-parts.com, we have an abundance of used truck bed parts in are area from owners/businesses who pull their truck bed to convert over to specialty/work platforms.

Other than car-parts.com, there are some businesses out in the country on 287. I will look for them when I am back of that way.

What specific details are you looking for? Year, color, integrated step?

I just swapped my tailgate, if you're doing the same for the same shouldn't be an issue. Mine was a bit different since I have a manual handle and the new one was the auto-down version.
