If you were just looking to add XM, could you install the new antenna and then install the splitter at the headliner? The curry plug from the antenna would go into the splitter. After the split the curry plugs into the curry on the body harness, blue plugs into blue which runs to the TCU. The maroon from the antenna connects to the maroon which runs to the TCU. An extension FAKRA would run from the ACM to the glovebox curry plug. This, in theory, would give you XM and retain the GPS for FordPass at the TCU without having to disassemble and tape the old antenna to the inside.

The unknown is whether the GPS signal after the split is the same for the TCU and APIM...
Antenna plugs are male, splitter plugs are female and body harness plugs are female so no that won’t work. Since you’re already buying the antenna, it makes no sense to buy an additional splitter when taking apart the stock antenna is free.

One thing I thought would work but would take a cable extension is moving the GPS chip from the old antenna to the antenna on the left side. Since it only has one cable coming out I would think one of those spots are empty inside and you could use the same screws from the old antenna and mount the chip in there however you would need a cable extension to get over to it. I'm betting they look very similar if not the same on the inside.

How is any of that cheaper and easier than disassembling the original antenna and taping it above the headliner?

In my case, I'm not really looking for cheaper. I am looking for better GPS signal and having the antenna on the roof seems like it would be a better option than inside the roof skin. FordPass often says "Unable to locate" so maybe it won't really be that much worse with cellular based location or having the antenna taped to the roof.

I ordered the antenna and splitter this afternoon. Should be in by Thursday. SiriusXM is enabled in the APIM and ACM and I was able to display the radio ID, so I just need to find some time and a dry area to work once everything is in.

I agree with Rineland I wasn't looking for cheap when I did this. Also, I live in Texas where we can get 100+ temp days starting in May and run through September. No tape is going to stay stuck to the roof in that heat so that is why I put mine in an SSD enclosure above the headliner padded. Everything still works but I wouldn't have mind keeping it outside the cab for better signal. A short extension cable wouldn't cost that much if there is room in the left antenna.

Make sure you make the change to the IPC if you want to see what is playing in the instrument screen. See a few post back but below are the changes.

My VIN:720-05-01 0800
Donor VIN: 720-05-01 1810 The one is what makes it work so I went from 0 to 1 - 720-05-01 1800.

Don’t know how much better GPS reception needs to be?
Smart phone have a gps antenna and they work very inside a f150 on determining location.

The GPS/Sirius chip in the stock antenna has a clear sky view sans 1/8" of ABS plastic. Are you having GPS problems BEFORE adding the Sirius antenna?

Why are you sticking the GPS antenna to the roof skin? Just tape it to the top side of the headliner. You guys are making this way harder than it needs to be. Go into the APIM diagnostics and check the GPS signal strength. If it's fine, there is nothing to gain. Hold down FF on the steering wheel and dash to access the menu, audio needs to be on first. End the "audio test" that pops up and scroll down to Testing. Open that menu and scroll to your GPS signal data.

Anyway, do whatever makes you happy.

Yup, got the IPC done and it currently displays "0". I assume once the antenna is connected and providing info that should update. If not, then I may take a look at what @Ranual changed in the GWM to relay that info (I know, I know, be very careful). I may do this anyway because one thing I miss from my '21 that had navigation and XM was the turn-by-turn prompts in the IPC when using Apple Maps via CarPlay. It seems with the Nav and XM removal, those prompts are also removed from the IPC. I tried changing the second string second digit to "1", which according to the spreadsheet enables turn by turn navigation but nothing pops up. My neighbor picked up an early '22 with nav and XM and I pulled his vin and as-builts. The only other thing different is 720-10-01 xxxx xx4x xxxx, which enables "considerate prompts". Not sure what that is but I'm going to try that next.

Also, on the SiriusXM source, I tested my volume controls and it does change the volume on the screen so I don't seem to have an issue there.

Excellent point. I'm still curious if the single XM antenna and splitter can provide signal to the TCU so I'm going to buy whatever FAKRA adapter (sounds like male to male) to install that between the blue splitter and blue harness to the TCU and see if it works. If not, I'll stick the original GPS antenna to the headliner and just use the splitter to run from the glovebox to the ACM.

Occasionally I'll go into the FordPass app and be greeted with "Unable to locate". It seems that force closing the app and reopening it refreshes the location. Perhaps it's more a matter of the app timing out before it receives the location data from the truck. It always ends up finding it. Now, the compass in the IPC on the other hand.... completely useless.

For me the tape wasn’t an option regardless with heat/humidity here that why I used an enclosure. I didn’t know about the APIM diagnostic so that’s good to know!

Yes the compass is useless, the dealship wants to replace my APIM to try and fix the issue but it’s been on backorder for over a couple months and I’m not sure it will fix the issue. There are a couple of TSBs out for 21s and for early 22s.

The Fordpass app is well known for those quirks. We don't even bother with it to charge the Mach E since it failed on us once.

Just an FYI, the antenna suitable to receive SiriusXM data also receives GPS data and serves as a secondary cell antenna. The issue with those adapters is that sometimes they'll cause signal errors due to poor assembly or no shielding on the conductor. The one in the OP is the only one I've confirmed that does work. So just to recap, you're doing to put the factory splitter between the antenna and body harness connector with a female>male adapter, and then run another female>female extension from the glove box to ACM? You're likely to run into signal strength issues by doing that, but good luck.

I'm tempted to set "compass sync" on 720-01-01 to "not present" and see if it removes it from the display. If it's not going to be accurate, might as well remove it. Unlike a broken clock, it's not even right twice a day.

I replaced my antenna with the OEM made for XM, I used the OEM splitter. I do have a DTC for the TCU and Jesse was working with Forscan to get a version that will let us write to the TCU to change the antennae input. Fordpass works just fine and I have not had any issues with it since I made the switch.

Why would you have to change anything with the TCU?

As XLT 22 said folks are making this more complicated then it needs to be ( except for those adding nav which has its own issues). You want Xm

Make the needed Apim and ACM changes.

Install an Xm antenna.

Add a fraka extension cable up front.

Strip out and plug in the gps antenna place it in the headliner .

Or
Just add a xm antenna as I did up front.

Done enjoy your XM!
