the instructions I followed were from this post: https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/add-trailer-brake-controller-to-2024.24864/post-610065
After futzing with it a bit, I realized that "load backup you took in step 1 for the new TRM" was where I was having an issue.
After connecting to TRM I selected "load all" from the backup and the mostly FFFF read from the replacement controller would show as different values, so I have a good backup and it's loading. I then made the 1 bit change (a 0 to a 1 in my case) and selected "write all", then did the IPC, etc...
when it didn't work I reconnected to FORScan and saw that there were still many FFFF, so somehow the Write All didn't do what I expected:
(yes I run FORScan in linux using Wine)
I loaded the saved values into FORScan again, changed my 0 to a 1 and wrote just than one block. I worked (my 1011 30EC was now 1011 31ED), but I noticed that doing this write had reset all the other blocks in FORScan to FFFF again (except the checksums of course)
I tried to load again and this time write the 791-01-02 register without a change, and once again the other addresses got reset to FFFF.
So what I did to fix it in the end was to reload the saved values, but I saved the bottom block 791-04, then saved 791-03, then 792-01, then finally saved 791-01 with the 1 bit enabled, and things looked OK after that. I made sure the IPC was done as per the instructions, and now I see the gain change when I press +/- and I get "Trailer not connected" when I squeeze the controller, so I think I'm all good
Don't know if the way to load the previous controller data is something known that this newbie didn't understand, but maybe this will help the next newbie...
After the first try I had DTCs in the TRM and the truck didn't act like it had a TBC1)*BE SURE TO BACKUP ORIGINAL TRM WITH FORSCAN BEFORE SWAPPING, THIS WILL BE NEEDED TO ACTIVATE NEW TRM.
Once new TRM and Dash switch are installed you can activate them in Forscan.
TRM change is manual but easy if you understand the spreadsheet.
4)load backup you took in step 1 for the new TRM
5)go down to Address 791-01-02 and make note of what the 6th character is. In my case it was a 6
in the chart 6 = BQC NOT_CONSIDERED • PSCMEC ENABLE • SYNCEC PRESENT • TBMC NOT_PRESENT
We want the same setting but with TBMC NOT_PRESENT changed to TBMC PRESENT
in the chart 7 = BQC NOT_CONSIDERED • PSCMEC ENABLE • SYNCEC PRESENT • TBMC PRESENT
So in my case I change the 6th digit from 6 to 7
