I have the tailgate step. Could it be the tailgate step assembly be causing the noise?

Or could it be the leaf springs?

My clunk was leaf springs. I retorqued the U bolts and added extra rubber insulators and not a peep since. I haven't heard the step make any noise ever. Search for leaf spring clunk.

Yes, situations do present where you can hear the step clanking around. A loose spare could also be another point, but not likely. Worth checking though. The tailgate step for-sure is a noise source.

I removed the spring out of my tailgate step so it would sit flush and I don't hear it bounce. Must be something else.

I think it might have been loose bed bolts?

I had Rhino liner sprayed on. The shop removed the bed bolts to spray the bed liner on. After I got it back there is no more knocking noise.

I have never heard of a shop doing that. They would just spray over the bolts.

I hope the shop replaced those bolts. They are a one time use only. The bolt stretches when torqued to the correct ft/lbs. It is in the Ford manual on removing and reinstalling the truck box.
