I’ll post more details later but I thought some of you might be interested to see the inside of your 2021 5.0 at 3,500 miles.
FYI… this engine was babied for the 1st 2000, driven normally for the remaining 1,500 and NEVER had anything but “76” brand, regular gas.

Great pictures, what’s the reason for the tear down?

Looks very clean, but I would expect it to be. Can I ask why you you are tearing into your engine at only 3500 miles?

An Oil Change isn't as easy as it used to be!

Honestly... All I know at this point is my #6 cylinder lost compression. Since I can see the piston and the cylinder itself I can rule out a piston or ring issue so that leaves a valve train issue. A broken valve spring is my guess since it's a known issue with the 5.0 (among others) but I guess I'll find out next week.

I just HOPE whatever it is doesn't involve ordering a part that's sitting in a shipping container off the coast of long beach!

I'll keep you posted...

Thanks for all the photos! Sucks that it happened. I hope they diagnose and fix soon. Seems like you have a good perspective ?
In particular, it is interesting to see the tubes associated with the Cylinder Deactivation system. Also, do you know why the tops of the pistons have those triangular ridges? I haven't seem that before.
These photos pretty much bust the myth that the 5.0 is simpler than the Ecoboosts. It's been a few years since I've pulled the heads off a motor.... There's a lot of moving parts!

While it does suck royal ass that my engine is being dismantled, I don’t really “need” the truck right now so it’s not a major inconvenience at this point. My Ranger 4x4 is running like a top and the Dealership gave me a pretty nice loaner that I’m having fun with. I wasn’t planning to put the 2021 to work until spring anyway.

It’s interesting (for me) to see the inside of my engine and I figured “some” of you might find it as interesting as I do so I posted these photos.

I’m blessed with a GREAT mechanic at the local Ford Dealership and I have 100% faith in his ability to get her back on the road. Plus… going forward I now have a mechanic with an intimate knowledge of my truck which will be comforting if I ever have any problems in the future.

I bought the Primium Warranty with the truck so these issues are FORD'S problem for the next seven years! By then... I'm pretty sure we will have flushed out any gremlins.

I’m just dying to find out what happened and get back to learning my new truck!

I am not much of a "mechanical" person, so forgive my stupidity. What happened that you knew you lost compression? Describe the actual issue so I will know if it happens to me!

I’m assuming since they pulled drivers side head it’s a valve spring. I’m pretty sure the Coyote is numbered like all other ford engines in that #6 would be drivers side second back cylinder. Minus the overhead cam system, it doesn’t look that complicated to do an in chassis head removal. Seems like more carbon on the pistons than I’d expect at such low mileage. I’ve changed valve springs on the Windsors without pulling the head. Hopefully they get you running soon!

Turns out it was a shattered valve. "UNIKRNF150" has taken on a whole NEW meaning!
It damaged the rollers & the cam shaft but not the head or below.

Thank God I don't have a business relying on having this truck on the road!

We're waiting to hear if Ford wants it repaired or will be sending a new head. I really don't care either way. I have the Premium Care ESP so it's THEIR problem until 2028!

After eight months of waiting for them to build this truck.. I made "other arrangements" long ago so other than the payments I'm making on a truck I haven't been able to drive in 2022... I'm just finding this all very fascinating to watch.

Of course all my buddies telling me with GREAT JOY... "I told you to get a Toyota"! lol

I'd rather have a broken down 2021 F150 than a Toyota ANY DAY!

I've driven the new Toyotas and they don't hold a candle to the 2021 5.0 F150.

It just died while I was driving down the road.

I tried to restart it in neutral while I was rolling but it would start & run really shitty for 10-20 seconds and then die.

I wouldn't worry about yours. THIS IS a very unusual situation. I'm just lucky that way!

I agree about the carbon on the pistons. I was a little surprised to see that too. I think I might be switching to Chevron gas.

This is the "silver lining". Being able to see the inside of your engine at such low mileage.

That's WHY I wanted to post these pictures for you all to see. I really gas out (no pun intended) to see this stuff that you normally won't get to see for years unless you're a mechanic.

Hopefully that's the end of the problem. You are very fortunate you have a trusted and experienced mechanic.

It was very interesting to see all the photos, much appreciated ?.

I was particularly interested to see the Oil Pump belt everyone has been making such a fuss about.

I don’t know why but for some reason I was picturing cam drive belts as well but that’s clearly NOT the case.
I’m still not sure what to make of the Oil Pump belt but as long as it lasts 70k, it’s all good.

It CERTAINLY lasted longer than the #6 VALVE!
lol
