I was in the market for a current gen 5.0 V8 until i did a little research and found out that Ford has adopted the cylinders deactivation on their trucks. Anyways, i was wanting to know if any permanent solutions have been discovered on disabling that cylinders deactivation??

Why do you want to disable it?

What damage do you expect down the road? Cylinder deactivation is hardly new and has been around for over a decade now. Outside of some cylinder wear on Honda's first implementation of it, which only lead to increased oil usage, I have seen very few problems with it on all vehicles that use it.

My cousin's Silverado has it and he's experienced powertrain problems cause of it. My neighbor has a Ram 1500 with MDS and he's experienced problems with his powertrain as well.

Problems that can be directly connected to cylinder shut off?

I think the idea of cylinder deactivation being this horrible thing is overblown and outdated.

the early years of cylinder deactivation at GM definitely had issues. I had an 08 GMC with AFM which was the first year for it. It ate oil for breakfast as the miles got up but it never ever gave me other issues in 200,000 miles.

On the other side of it, my dad has driven 4 Silverado model years with the 5.3 with AFM to 150,000 for work and never had an ounce of issues with them. My best friends at 80k on a 5.3 with issues… so I guess what I’m saying is there will always be an issue withit if you dig hard enough but those are always the first and loudest to complain when the majority of owners have no issues therefor you never even hear about it.

We don’t have any evidence of it being an issue on Fords yet so I think it’s best to trust the engineers and leave it be until there is some compelling reason to change…. (I am also a 5.0 owner) I wouldn’t worry too much about what GMs and Rams do… they always do things they aren’t supposed to ;)

Drive the truck in tow-haul mode all the time.

I would be more worried about consumption.

Your brother likely has issues with shitty lifters that GM refuses to recall, and aren't at all related to cylinder deactivation.
As far as the RAM issues are concerned as mentioned, it's highly unlikely that cylinder deactivation is in any way related to powertrain issues.

As someone who has contacts in both manufacturers service industries, I can confirm that there are no internal notices for issues pertaining to cylinder deactivation and it is not something that's even on the first or second page of troubleshooting lookout items when a vehicle comes in for service with powertrain issues.

This is the same mindset of people who constantly want to disable the auto start/stop. Technology advances, it's humans who are resistant to change because we don't like new shit. Get over the archaic thinking already.

Can’t resist: Pretty sure the Chevy and Ram were gonna have power train issues no matter what.
