There is a way to get to the front bolt that is under the pocket in the shifter part of the console. But you have to have the top cover off and the side panel off in order to get in there with a box end wrench and turn it 1/8 of a turn at a time. Took me a while before I figured out how you can raise the shifter and pull the little door out and voila!, there's the bolt!!! But yeah, having the secondary method you mention with a rotary knob shifter would be a great way to do it.You can't remove the shifter while it's folded down (at least I can't figure out how to raise it to get to the front bolt), but you can pop the side cover off and unplug it. Then you could plug in a second shifter (either a folding F150 shifter or a much smaller rotary shifter from a bronco sport) and at least drive it to the dealership instead of having it towed.
As I said, I just disconnected the battery for 5 minutes, re-connected it and things have been fine since then. But thanks for the info!!!!
