Oof 3 hours! Each way or round trip? Round trip wouldn't be too bad...mine was about 2 at my spot last year.I checked out the site and maps; looks like they’re all about 3+ hrs away. Not horribly out of reach but definitely a full day.
Do you find there’s enough quality wood always available? Are the trees already cut down or are you felling them yourself? (which I’m not opposed to; kinda look forward to getting a chainsaw, lol!) Or do you sometimes head to one site then have to keep going if it’s been picked over?
This is likely for spring planning, but I’d be keen to save a few $100 on wood next year, even if it means a couple day-trips (we go thru about 3 cords a winter, probably closer to 4 if it’s 100% softwood)
Hey thanks for the kind words! Man, it's the best. Self sufficiency is a great feeling. That's why I'm doing it...The reward of sitting in front of a wood burning stove when it's freezing outside...knowing that you went and got the fuel...it's awesome. I have a natural gas furnance but it's not the same. Plus it costs about $950 CAD for a winter. Thanks for pictures! Nice truck too ? Awesome to be outside doing something productive isn’t it… I remember those days very well. We heated our home with wood burning stoves back then. We didn’t have much and farmers let us cut up/clean up their down wood in their tree stands.
Thanks!
Yeah 3hrs each way, at least. The closest are near Port Alberni logging roads and I’m in Vic. Someone did share on Reddit that logging companies like Mosaic give permits; I’ll look at Teal too. They charge (of course…30 for truck, 40 for trailer) and only give advanced notice of one week but some are near Nanaimo which is much closer. And 70 for roughly 1 & 1/2 cord (if I’m doing my math right for a small trailer) is still a decent deal!Oof 3 hours! Each way or round trip? It depends when you go, really...I'm getting it super late this year and am needing to hunt for new zones at the same time. I checked beside a few pullouts but didn't find much until the 8km mark. That's where I got that 1/2 cord from yesterday.
Deadfall and softwood is the only thing we're allowed to get. You'll defintiely get to use that chainsaw! I couldn't imagine doing it without one. 4 cords of softwood sounds about right. I usually grab a mixture of fir and pine and call it a day. Saving the money is nice, and it feels more rewarding.
Ah that's too bad about the commute. I timed mine today and it's about an hour 5 minutes round trip. Save for getting stuck behind a turtle driving up the mountain who won't use a pullout to let you by. Second day in a row! Whatever happened to common courtesy?Yeah 3hrs each way, at least. Well...one cord is >$400 depending how much hardwood I ask for. It's gone up A LOT. The guy I use is reliable and I get seasoned wood but it's gotten more & more pricey each year. Hence my sudden interest and host of questions, lol. I mean, one weekend is probably a full tank of gas; borrow/rent a trailer & chainsaw.m, $70 permits from Mosaic (or free from Bc), probably get 3 cords for $400-500 total I think. it'll probably all be softwood so maybe need 3 trips, but still!Ah that's too bad about the commute. That's not bad deal if the wood is easily accessible. With 6 hours of driving how much will you be saving? I mean, I guess the adventure is worth giving a shot though =)
The cost has been rising, for sure. I think getting hardwood is worth it though. Well hey, I hope it works out. Will you post a thread? I look forward to seeing!Well...one cord is >$400 depending how much hardwood I ask for. It's gone up A LOT. And like you say: weekend out in middle of nowhere chopping wood? Not the worst way to spend a weekend!!

Wow this is beautiful! Happy to see you enjoying your F-150!Today's spot was my favourite. A little less yield than yesterday but it was worth being in the sun. I should probably just add these pics to the main post.
